Yesterday I got laid off from Google. Today they announced earnings and are doing great. This company has no reason to tighten its belt other than to enrich shareholders (which are mainly the executives and the board).

IT HAS BEEN

DAYS SINCE A PROGRAM FAILED TO COMPILE BECAUSE PASTED SAMPLE CODE HAD BEEN PASSED THROUGH A SYSTEM THAT TRANSFORMED QUOTES TO SMART QUOTES

@mcc Someday we'll solve this problem once and for all by designing a language that accepts smart quotes!

Well, it's finally happened. I've generated too much #rust code and now rustc uses more memory than my development laptop holds.
I'm actually kind of perturbed, it's not that much code (74kloc) and it spikes pretty hard to 16 GiB.

@janriemer It's reproducible building just my crate and not a dependency but it could be an interaction.

I'm pretty sure it is an enum size issue, since I have a couple of match (e1, e2) statements so as I add more variants, the match domain increases quadratically. Anyway, I'll give a few things a shot to figure it out.

@janriemer Doesn't seem to be a big improvement. I'm only building the one package for reproducibility, so I thought it wouldn't matter to limit the build to one job.

I'm measuring on another computer so at least I'm not exploding something every time. :)

@markusl On Linux (16 GiB max) and WSL (90+ GiB). I'm not really worried about the memory pressure/swap space so much as the rustc memory usage.

I'm fascinated by "Love on a Real Train" because why did they need to specify the train was real. What other kind of train could it have been. Did they want to make it clear the train is not a metaphor. Is the idea you have frequently fallen in love in the past on commuter trolleys but this is the first you've ever fallen in love on, you know, a REAL train

@mcc The Real Train is about continuous love. If it had been an Integer Train it would have been more discrete.
