@buttondown will you have a booth at @pycon? I'm curious to know how Buttondown compares to my current email/newsletter setup and would love to chat with folks in-the-know.

Regardless of whether you'll have a booth, thank you for sponsoring! 💖

@treyhunner @pycon Nope, but still happy to chat if you're ever interested :)

Trying to think of interesting use cases for a toy/reference ActivityPub implementation, ideally of the shape:

  1. Public data
  2. Multi-faceted (ie there would be different channels/authors/etc that someone could subscribe to)
  3. Dynamic, and changes at least once a day.

Please help us think of something more exciting than "stock data". Stock data is boring.

We're very, very excited to work alongside Ghost to evolve and proselytize ActivityPub as a great tool for authors to stay connected with their audience without tethering themselves to Yet Another Algorithm or Yet Another Walled Garden:

@matthiasott it looks like we can't read the full messages in Own Your Web archives on Buttondown, is that on purpose?

Trying on https://buttondown.email/ownyourweb/archive/ to click on a “read more” link, I only get the title (screenshot).

@nhoizey @matthiasott Can y'all try now? Looks like a blip in our rendering engine (for exactly the edge case you described; archives for folks who were already subscribed + received the email copy.)

@buttondown looks like the subscribe text box at the bottom of newsletter pages gets removed by some ad blockers (including mine). :( Are you aware of that? Any chance of a workaround? 😬 (my own subscribe form on my homepage looks fine)

buttondown,
@buttondown@mastodon.social avatar

@hynek What adblocker are you using? We have a <noscript> fallback and I'm surprised it's not being triggered here.

@buttondown I think you have a JS error on one specific docs page: https://docs.buttondown.email/tutorials/names (I tried in multiple browsers)

buttondown,
@buttondown@mastodon.social avatar

@zachleat Oh no! Does it happen in incognito too? I'm not seeing the error on my end so it might be an interaction with a browser extension?

It's pretty thrilling to watch the trend of folks building out their own durable, personal presences on the web — and humbling to be a part (however small) of the movement. (Congrats on the move, @ricmac!)

All right, for anyone wondering I am definitely planning to move off of quite soon. I want to take a moment to share some specifics about why it's hard for a lot of people to move off the platform, even though you "own your list".

I think most of the stories people are seeing about migrating away from Substack are from prominent writers. If you have a large subscriber base, it is cheaper to use a different platform:

buttondown,
@buttondown@mastodon.social avatar

@ehmatthes I would be remiss if I didn't plug our 'platform fee' tool which sadly does not have charts but does allow for folks to plug in their own costs / subscription counts:

buttondown,

@kcarruthers here! (you don't need to do anything; if you have a custom domain you already are compliant!)
