Next was a fantastic pair of talks by Justine Haekens (analysis of Spotify playlist composition through the lens of copyright and competition law) and @JuanDGut (implementation of AI by Colombia's competition agency and IP office) at Maastricht University. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNiyQSdPysI (4/6)

Last was an excellent talk by @jtlg on generative AI and copyright at the Allen Institute for AI. Favorite quote: "It's not at all obvious that the incentives to create of the sort that copyright offers are the appropriate system of law to govern this new [technology]. It may be that what replaces copyright due to generative AI is as different from copyright as copyright was from the patronage system that came before it." Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toPhm4zBp00 (6/6)

wow… $100,000/year college is right around the corner. CMU isn't quite there, and lots of students don't pay the full price… but $86k?

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/05/your-money/paying-for-college/100k-college-cost-vanderbilt.html

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

@jbigham Massive collapse of mid tier universities is right around the corner, especially mid tier schools charging prices like this. Assuming they got a job instead, or go to a community college while working, after 4 years kids who forgo these schools will be at least $550K ahead. It's unlikely the differential earnings from a 4 year degree would come even close to making up this gap

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

@jbigham I would argue that at schools like CMU it's a valid argument, but after you get out of the top tier the brand cachet is worth very little and students will certainly learn just as much at community colleges for a small fraction of the cost.

I think the timing on them going out is relatively short - a few decades

I always forget how outlandish business/econ seminar Q&A culture is.

Derailing a speaker on their third side? Normal, expected, encouraged.

Waiting to ask a question until the end of a talk?

Black Panther “We don’t do that here”

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

@bkeegan I have discovered that accounting specifically is the worst - one of the top conferences intentionally interrupts speakers after 5 minutes to allow for questions - which always last at least 5 minutes.

@andresmh Your first?

bwaber,

@andresmh I've been in a bunch in Japan but they were smaller than this one. Although for one I was in a skyscraper and the building tilted significantly - it's supposed to do that, but seeing the horizon at a significant angle was disconcerting
