Germany has just “survived” its first year without nuclear power.. and nothing bad has happened. At all. Nothing.

It was supposed to be the end of industrial Germany, blackouts everywhere, etc.

.. and nothing happened.

Which does not prevent the same doomsayers from insisting that without nuclear energy, Germany is finished.

Presumably their lobbying contracts haven’t run out yet..

Actually, no, we have actually burned less coal than ever before, which is really good.

The list of supported RAW file formats in 8.6 is getting longer and longer, and this time we have added the Olympus ".ORI" format to be cataloged, with thumbnails and metadata...

And another in 14.4.1 that never bothered to fix.

Is 17.4.1 really 17.4.1? Or what?

This one is laughable, but it shows the complete lack of quality control from Apple these days.

And yes, that one has been around at least for three years, we had reported it, but hey.

cdfinder,
@cdfinder@techhub.social avatar

@arnan

Yeah, totally!

Their software quality is so unbelieveable bad, crazy really. They should be ashamed.

cdfinder,
@cdfinder@techhub.social avatar

@luigigreco

Wow, sure, that is possible, but:

I am not sure if that is not even worse? Apple releasing the name version again, and no way for a user to determine that? That is really really bad.

And also, this information in the Finder window was still so wrong before.

It is only SEVEN years after we had reported this glaring and obvious bug in the ExFAT driver of macOS, and yes, it is still here today in 14.4.1

No, , that drive has NOT been created or updated in January 1970.

How I wish Apple would actually start fixing their bugs for once.

And yes, the ExFAT driver in macOS has a LOT more bugs.

cdfinder, to macos
@cdfinder@techhub.social avatar

Wow, it is 14.4.1 already, and we are still getting these stupid untitled and misleading "notifications" from the badly designed and completely undocumented "security" features in macOS when adding a launch item.

Oh .
We had reported this dangerous and stupid bug two years ago already, but of course Apple has ignored it, like thousands of other bugs.

macOS is such a horrible

Not looking forward to May, because I need to update from Ventura to Sonoma before WWDC.

cdfinder,
@cdfinder@techhub.social avatar

@lapcatsoftware

It's a shitshow.
Can't get it to use my calendars, it messes up access privileges , and again after reboot , "System Settings" hangs all the time, external monitors still mess up after waking from sleep, and so much more.
14 is a really awful experience.

Watermark with an image! Until now, we had the option to have a text as a visual watermark, but now there can also be images!

Patch in your company logo, or whatever to your exported photos!

Q: Could you advise whether to format a new external drive as APFS or Mac OS Extended?

Interesting question indeed.

What format would you use?

@spidermedic

Yes, that was once the official stance from Apple indeed.

But HFS+ doesn't really fare so well for very large volumes with a huge number of smaller files, due to the allocation block size.

In these cases, APFS, though slower, might be a better choice...

So, it turns out that in #macOS 14 #Sonoma, if you have a NSPopUpButton, and use removeFromSuperview and then later addSubview to add that item again to a view, macOS doesn't draw the button properly, until it gets clicked at least once.

(setting up said Popup is very expensive, as in "slow", in the app in question, so for 15 years, it was a working idea to keep it around)

Awesome.

Yet another #bug in the long long list of massive problems in the #AppKit system frameworks in #macOS14.

Wow, 15.3 and 14.4.1 are such a weird dumpster fire of strange bugs and problems.

Merging the AppKit and UIKit low-level system frameworks is not going all too well, obviously.

That error message in Xcode is catastrophically ridiculous, really.

It indicates yet another serious bug in Apples own private frameworks.

Sigh.

cdfinder,
@cdfinder@techhub.social avatar

@i2h3

The massive problem is that this is of course NOT officially documented by Apple.

We have just seen that from numerous crash reports, "hang" reports, and also when setting breakpoints in system callback methods, and checking the callback stack. More often than not we see the "UIKit.framework" playing a great role in macOS applications, especially when there are problems..

And not only is that not documented, it also causes massive amounts of problems, when the behaviour of the long established AppKit frameworks suddenly changes, and you have no idea where to start looking.

Essentially, after each new major yearly macOS release, we should test EVERY SINGLE system call, which of course is not really realistic.

This is very bad for the overall stability of macOS itself, and all the Mac applications.

Yes, for can and metadata of photo files!

And you can add ratings, keywords, descriptions and all, too.
And convert these files to other formats.
And check every pixel in the Light Table.
And build beautiful web galleries with them.
And so on.

Enjoy!

While developing and testing my Mac tool Find Any File, I ran into a weird effect with Cloud storage drives such as OneDrive:

Each file in the cloud is mirrored as a seemingly online version but with its contents all zero-bytes, even if the file has been downloaded (i.e. if it's online). I wonder how I can identify these fake files in a generic way and hide them from the search results.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Pictures below show Finder's and FAF's view of the same files in OneDrive.

A window from FindAnyFile showing the search results for a file name of a file stored in OneDrive. It lists the same file twice, once under the home's Library/CloudStorage and once under Library/Group Containers/.../OneDrive.noindex. Both files show the same size and modification date, with the first showing a Cloud symbol to indicate that it's offline, while the second has no such symbol.

We have discovered a bug in , which will write GPS values with a low precision to the XMP metadata of photos.

This can cause to show a slightly wrong GPS coordinate as well when cataloging photos.

Folks: Precision in GPS coordinates are really important!

Using the #Spotlight plugins in #macOS, #NeoFinder can now catalog text content from #Apple Pages, Apple Numbers, Apple Keynote, Microsoft #Excel, and Microsoft #Powerpoint files.

That is pretty cool when you need to search your #NAS for a certain spreadsheet...

Yeah, so we got a lot of requests for an option to hide folders in the Display Filter, so...

Here it is! 8.6 can do that. And more!

You can now set up multiple options at once, like for example, have it show all landscape photos with a GPS GeoTag, keywords, but no Person data yet. And so on.

I think that is pretty cool!
