Anyone out there using ChatGPT to generate content ideas, monsters, magic items, etc., or is that generally considered verboten? I've been playing around with it and actually quite like some of the stuff I get out of it... what do you folks think? Useful tool, or instrument of the enemy?

Would love to hear your feedback on this topic.

So, a little bummed... it appears that The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons is only available for pre-order in the US.

I can't find any outlet in Canada taking pre-orders, and with my luck, the print run will be completely gone before I ever get a chance to buy it.

Anyone know if this gem is available in Canada anywhere?

Posting this here as motivation to keep going...

The elements of a campaign story arc are more or less in place, and I'm now dedicated to finishing a playable first module for Levels 1-2 (AD&D 1st ed).

Further to my unhealthy obsession with the dark planes of existence, it's a storyline revolving around a rift leading to The Abyss!

I give you... The Infernal Chronicles!

The campaign runs to levels 12+, and is mostly situated on the Prime Material Plane.

The Temple of Abyssal Flame is the home of the Dark Conclave, an order of cultists intent on releasing a primordial Abyssal entity (Tz'arath, Lord of Chains) into the world, and have opened a minor rift between the two planes causing grief for the town of Briarhaven.

Characters don't actually visit The Abyss until the final module, and they certainly won't be crashing headlong into friendly Tz'arath!

Also, I teased this idea to my kids and their significant others over Christmas, and everyone was stoked about the idea - they are really excited to give AD&D 1e a try (they're all basically 5e players).

Bards in 1e are kind of a cool multi-class, and one I never really explored or experienced much back in the day. I suspect the class has evolved quite a bit as we've moved through editions, but as I don't play 5e, I'm not certain of that.

In AD&D, bard aspirants play for a minimum of 5 levels as a fighter, then switch to the thief class and play a minimum of 5 levels there before finally moving to the druid/bard class.

That is one serious ball of diversification, kids.

For one reason or another, certain monsters leave a lasting impression on you. For me, the mere mention of a Pit Fiend causes an involuntary shudder of fear and an immediate desire to turn and run the other way.

What's the one monster that stands apart from others for you, and why?

We had a lengthy discussion here a few weeks (months?) ago about people's use of psionics in 1e - I omitted it entirely, others swore it was absolutely fantastic and I was missing out. Reading some Drizzt stuff from RA Salvatore right now and Illithids play a big part... maybe I should rethink my position on brain-fighting!

Another monster that stands out for me is the undefeated, undisputed champion of "quantity over quality," the lowly KOBALD. When your party's got a combat itch that they just need to scratch, a few waves of pesky kobolds can be just what the doctor ordered.

Musings on "GP = XP"...

As a new DM in the early days, I really had a hard time understanding why a PC would be awarded experience pts simply for picking a few coins up off the ground (sacrilegious, I know, but there it is). Truthfully, it took me a few months to come around to the idea, despite it being clearly explained in the DMG why GP does, in fact, equal XP.

Below are the excerpts from DMG explaining the logic and mechanics of awarding XP for treasure. Now you know!

Today is the 40th anniversary of the very first time I ever played Dungeons & Dragons.

On Sept 29, 1983, I joined a group of classmates playing AD&D down in the high school cafeteria. I rolled up a 1st-level thief, who enjoyed a lively three-month career until a session in December when I fell from a rooftop attempting to elude an assassin contracted by the guild to "end my annoyances."

To this day, I am thankful that luck led me to that group, that game, and this community.
