Finally got our last tax forms and trying to work out our own taxes. Oye.

@ericmwalk I used to get mine done in January but we have a newer bank that files an extension for a 1099 until March every year. I just want to get it all over with :/

Woot, my initiation ritual is in a little over a week!

@freemo Which degree? I've been a master mason since 2009 or so

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@freemo Yeah, this sounds like your first degree. There are three for normal masons (and all sorts of options after that). I confess I haven't been to a lodge meeting since 2011 though. I've kept paying dues as they do some good things in the area I was in but I've never joined another lodge since moving from that area.

I really need to mute any post with a rawstory link as they occasionally catch me but they don't work at all if you enough self-respect to use an ad blocker.

Things that are built into WordPress but receive little-to-no use:

  1. Hello.php and an upsell of Akismet
  2. Blog posts
  3. Comments
  4. Dependency on an external service for profile pictures

Things that aren't built into WordPress but should be:

  1. Multiple authors per post
  2. A form builder for wp-admin
  3. An ORM that prevents n+1 queries
  4. Modularity via composer packages
  5. Bucket storage support

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@alda Looking at the OP, I think the resistance to modern PHP, particularly with modularity, is one of the biggest mistakes WP made. @pch

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@kraftner I think I remember that, and lots of talks of attempts at it. Kinda reminds me of the Fields API, TBH... so much interest by good devs and not just "no interest" at the top but leadership that actively prevents the work from being done. @alda @pch

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@alda I couldn't agree more. He's held so many initiatives back.

One of the things that pisses me off most about the WP "community" is the myth that "show up and do the work" means anything if you're not doing the specific work "that guy" wants.

If Cynde Lauper was to record "Time After Time" today I think it would do much better as "[Zoom] Call After [Zoom] Call."

I registered for @pluralistic 's book signing in Chicago on 17 Apr. It's pretty cool being in a city where I can do this. I have another signed hard cover of his last book but I had to do that one through the mail.

Of course I already bought the e-book for his latest so at least I'll be ready for it.

@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

Now Chicago is talking about building not 1, but 2 new stadiums for the Bears and the White Sox at over $1 billion each. The Bears current stadium was refurbished not long ago so a new one isn't needed and the White Sox's current stadium is from the 90s but the owner wants an entertainment district around it he can personally profit from so he's demanding the tax payers build him a new one.

What a joke.

It is amazing to me how the modern web claimed to be a tech to bring the world together and, in the end, it is doing the most damage to foster hate and division.

Been awhile since I went through a McDonald’s drive thru. Picked up breakfast and my food was handed to me without a bag. I looked back puzzled and asked for a bag.

“Oh you didn’t pay for a bag.”

But I was never asked if I wanted a bag and when did this become a thing? I can’t imagine ordering a huge family dinner and then passing me my food one by one. 🤦‍♂️

in the real world.

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@jnv That's a new one. Can I ask where that was? I wonder if it is a new state or city rule somewhere?

This afternoon I'm listening to a group called Rura and it has to be some of the most relaxing music I've heard in a while. Bonus in that it has some bagpipes.

Last month the media said EVs were dead. This month they're crediting EVs and hybrids for a large sales jump at Ford. Hmmm....

When I counted a bit ago I had 43 different meetings on my calendar for just this week with many at 1 hour and a few at 2 hours. I'm already set to go back to bed.

Was thinking today back on my early adventures in the cloud. Our VPS kept dying (as in the rack had literally caught fire) so we migrated to Azure. Like v1 Azure.

Website was up. Database was up. Sales contact forms ... failed. No SMTP support. So I installed an SMTP client and used a (weak) password in request headers to protect it.

Came to work the next day to learn our domain had been blacklisted for spam. Because I had no idea what I was doing and was running an open relay.

Fun times ...
