Is it Friday yet?

Was thinking today back on my early adventures in the cloud. Our VPS kept dying (as in the rack had literally caught fire) so we migrated to Azure. Like v1 Azure.

Website was up. Database was up. Sales contact forms ... failed. No SMTP support. So I installed an SMTP client and used a (weak) password in request headers to protect it.

Came to work the next day to learn our domain had been blacklisted for spam. Because I had no idea what I was doing and was running an open relay.

Fun times ...

It's funny to me some of the folks that I listen on a regular rotation these days including Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. When I was younger I didn't really listen to any pop music but now I really appreciate some of these artists.

I'm not sure my Mastodon instance will survive the US election season. Even my extensive mute list can't seem to keep up anymore.

So I spent the morning trying Mona again. Fool me once, shame on you… Fool me twice…

I'm back on @ivory after about an hour. Ivory would be the perfect app if I could hide general tabs on iPad and Mac (namely the notifications tab as I never, ever want to see any notification sans mentions) and if it had inline translations.

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

Mona has a lot of neat features on paper but, after numerous attempts to use it, most just don't work. Syncs are worthless, settings seem to randomly reset, I have no idea how to make the reading list position make any sense at all. I feel like it is a whole lot of half-baked features that make it impossible for me to use.

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@ivory Looking forward to it! Thank you for the updates!

chris, to random
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

Am I missing something or do settings for Mona not actually sync between devices? To get anything to show up, even my mute list, I seem to have to do a full settings import with every minor change.

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

Nevermind. Even a settings export/import won’t transfer my mute list. It looks like I’m going back to Ivory again.

I really, really want to like Mona but… damn this app is janky.

Had a great birthday dinner with Joy and some family and friends last night. Going to do our best to enjoy the gorgeous weather today.

I’ll call this weekend a win.

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@kel No, but tomorrow is my wife’s birthday so we celebrated early.

Anyone got thoughts on the frame.work laptops?

Worth it or not?

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@miss_jwo I have a 13” I bought last December and I’ve been really happy with it running a handful of different Linux distros

I would like to stop using Brave but nothing else I’ve found blocks ads on iOS as well. Any thoughts?

The crypto and tracking shit you can allegedly all turn off in the settings but I still don’t love/trust it.

I use Firefox on my computers but I don’t think there’s a way to make Firefox block ads on iOS and none of the Safari adblockers seemed to work for me.

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@sidereal @trendless I went through a lot of ad blockers on iOS/MacOS until I found 1 Blocker. I'm not sure what all you've tried but I would suggest giving it a fresh look. When I'm back on FF with uBlock Origin I notice how much better 1Blocker actually is.

    @jerclarke thank you. My wife’s recommendations today were pics of us and my mom who died in April.

    @feld @jnv it is. I opt out of all of this but apple keeps tagging my mom, who died in April, on my wife’s phone

    It’s unfortunate when you follow some great individuals here for one reason but then 80% of their posts turn to be political. The boosts don’t help.

    So many times I think I’m following them but quickly get reminded why I unfollowed. It’s too bad they don’t have a separate account for their other interests.

    chris,
    @chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

    @jnv Oye. I get it. I still see a few too (and then I still all-too-often boost them when I do). Adding more words really does help though.

    Question for folks here: what are examples of "good" security or privacy advice that are shared frequently, but are difficult for people to implement?

    Example: don't click on links in emails/mouse over links to see where they point.

    This is technically useful and accurate, but very difficult/impractical to do on a phone - and in some cases, the title for a link shown on mouseover can differ from the actual link!

    Any other examples like this? Please share!

    chris,
    @chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

    @funnymonkey Most really don't understand privacy and the implications of orgs like Google or Apple on their privacy. The idea that the org selling them things is part of the problem is so far out of their world view that they don't even try.

    chris,
    @chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

    @funnymonkey @tek It really is. Until it happens to "me" no one wants to do anything and even then they want to blame an individual and not really change anything in their own own workflow.

    @dvk @futtta Our new place is a smaller condo so we probably won't have any equipment in the unit. There's a nice exercise room in the building though. When we're finally up there full time I'll give it a shot. Reconciling my habits for now is hard though.

    chris,
    @chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

    @blit32 We did that for years. It honestly wasn't until I quit and just started walking that I really got healthier. While it isn't out of the question when we move, I'm still going to try a few other things first.

    chris,

    @whiskeybravo We lost ours the day before the first leg of our move last month. I have a feeling we'll be looking to adopt another next year when life calms down a bit.
