Guy who just changed my 8 year old iphone SE battery was telling me they only last 1-2 years nowadays, and he collects old iphones because they work

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

One thing that's nice about a big city is being able to just impromptu do a thing like that. I've been putting off that chore forever.

While the guy was changing the battery somebody got arrested outside

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

The guy in the phone store says to me, ever since that guy got killed by police a few years ago, there's new rules and the police are ineffective, and we need Trump because the new guy isn't doing anything.

It's neat how many toddlers there were on the overnight stretch of the Empire Builder, glad some people caught on to not wanting to subject their kids to flying

I find it a lot easier to do work than to find ways to instruct other people to usefully do work and so it's wild to me that many folks really think that not doing the work isn't doing work.

It never fails to amaze me what people choose to include in "white noise" tracks. If you have discernable sound effects, that's not white! I'm almost fallen asleep and then a "white noise" bird starts screeching or something

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

The soundcore app's default white noise setting is a continuous rhythmic procession of little clips of people chewing on food. What the fuck who would ever want that

It's nice that each seat has a power outlet but the train moves noticeably slower while I'm compiling Haskell

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

@kenbot Should I be using linear types?

@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

Tuples and curried functions are nice for toys, but they are industrial Haskell's worst enemy. If you're going to be able to jump into a big repo and understand stuff, you need to see record field names.

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

In Python you can add a new named parameter to a function and give it a default value so that you can refactor without changing all the call sites. You can do this in Haskell as well... but not if the parameter set is curried. Come on, don't write software in Haskell that is worse than Python! You can do better

You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?

@Edent The premise is confusing, why would I receive a call on my phone

Thread of blurry photos across America. Amtrak journey begins, just outside of Whitefish.

The platform in Tomah seems somewhat half assed

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

outskirts of Milwaukee appear pleasant

Chicago looks like a car place

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

33 hours aboard. A Korean man has blown a hole in the side of the train and we are all eager to find out if Chigaco supports human life

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

Quick impression but I kinda feel like Chicago actually has a more chaotic vibe than New York

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

Okay the difference is that this town seems to go to bed, I guess downtown is all offices.

They call this the great hall, it's pretty good I suppose

The vibes of Amtrak Chicago are fucking scary, I miss the open platforms

When I got on the train in Whitefish I saw zero security personnel. Here we were funneled through winding rope lines past a drug dog and half a dozen guys with their arms crossed.

Life doesn't have to be like this. There are places in the same country where life isn't like this.

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

It changes you too... on the Empire Builder I left my bag on the rack downstairs unattended. Here it's overhead, near me, because all signals say that people aren't to be trusted. You close up

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

Last leg of the trip was all in the dark, so blurry photo series is over.

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

Spend a while with a voice to text translation app trying to help a guy who only speaks... arabic?... looking for transportation from the station. well, moreso trying to explain that I cannot help because I've never been here before either. Why does nobody ever ask me for directions when I'm somewhere I know

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

Here is Ohio's oldest still operational covered bridge

chris__martin,
@chris__martin@functional.cafe avatar

@sanityinc well it's made of wood I guess
