Thinking about a convo @chrisphin kicked off (kicked off my a response I made$ about best-in-class products. I can’t think of any product class other than the iPad that has utterly defined/decimated the entire category, potentially to its own peril. I think iPad sales would be higher if iPad had any competition. But effectively it doesn’t. You have sub $200 Fire Tabs for children and you have iPads. That is it. That’s the whole market.

The good thing about letting people down, of course, is that if you self-flagellate enough, and then a bit more for good measure, it definitely makes up for it with them!

Just sit there and quietly seethe, really build up a good head of resentment about yourself and your myriad failings, and morally, spiritually, the balance is redressed. 💖

I dunno if I just haven’t been paying attention, or whether it’s a peculiarly Scottish perspective, but I haven’t really seen much fervour around the #coronation. I understand it’s complicated at best 😅 and it’s a particularly unusual one given the long reign of Elizabeth II — and so perhaps royalists’ natural inclination to celebrate is tempered by a feeling that that would be disrespectful to someone they felt loyal to — but still. I’m surprised.

Ruminations on mobile gaming, a 🧵

I spend some leisure time playing Star Trek Fleet Command from Scopely. It's a free-to-play mobile game that, in typical fashion, is heavily gated with pay-to-win mechanisms to let players advance.

As a minnow - someone who spends very little to play - I'm always flabbergasted when I talk to the whales, or those members of my alliance who think nothing of dropping hundreds of dollars at a time to gain a level or advance ship or building construction.

Once upon a simpler time, way back in 2012 before flat design was popular, I created Clear in partnership with Milen Dzhumerov and Phill Ryu.

The Clear video trailer went viral overnight racking up over a million views, and the app launched directly into the #1 spot in the App Store charts. It was a wild ride.

My daughter has an iPod touch and she adores it. She’s proven she uses it so creatively and sensibly and joyfully over the last five years, alongside dozens of other activities.

But its 32GB capacity is always maxed, and it’s time for me to get her a device with more space.
