ciferecaNinjo, to fedia

I’m getting random spontaneous errors when trying to upvote others. The precise error message is… (drum roll…) “Error”. Indeed, that’s it. I navigate back & upvote again, and sometimes it sticks eventually.

ciferecaNinjo,

I print a lot. As far as I’m concerned, is dead. It was killed by MS & Google. Probably 99+% of the world still does not use PGP. Web forms? No, they’re also dead to me because I refuse to solve most & most certainly will not solve a Google . Message centers? Also dead to me because a good number of them are snooped on by Cloudflare, or they proactively block Tor.

Even if a web form or message center is non-Cloudflare & open to Tor users, most of them demand too much info. They always make email address a required field. They’re not getting an email address from me if their MX server is Outlook or Gmail.

Hence why I’ve gone back to the paper letter, apart from the few recipients who still have a fax number.

ciferecaNinjo,

Actually there are lots of reasons because all of those applications mentioned involve both a sender and a recipient who are not both in the same organization. It’s always easy to get one person or entity to be technologically competent enough to handle data transmission using open standards in a secure & reliable way that minimizes access to those who should not see the message or metadata (such as surveillance advertisers). The problem is the other side. One of many reasons not to be digital is the other party is incompetent & says something like “don’t you have Facebook/whatsapp/gmail?” To which the response is “don’t you have XMPP with omemo, or a PGP key and an email address not hosted by a surveillance capitalist?”

ciferecaNinjo,

Are you talking about what I mentioned as “idea 1”? This is probably what I will attempt, but the question is how do you make a water-tight box that can be removed frequently (whenever the water needs to be turned off/on)?

ciferecaNinjo,

I just added pics to the original thread.

ciferecaNinjo,

If I move it higher, it will take on less water. But there would still be some water unless I move it all the way to the ceiling, which would really lengthen the path the water must go.

Regarding the other idea, it seems the house was extended at one point in time. So the wall was once an exterior wall and is very thick (~50cm?) and solid (concrete, brick, or combo of the two). Not sure if I’d be weakening it structurally to do that. It’s in a corner though, so there is perhaps an interior wall I could move it to the other side of. But I think it’s brick & thus also structural. Perhaps feasible though. It’s hard to be enthusiastic about demolishing part of a plaster & lath bedroom wall to reach it, but it could be the best option. I have to wonder if the original builders had a good reason for not doing that. Tricky though since I’ve seen plenty of dodgy work from the past builders of this house.

ciferecaNinjo,

One of the competing options is indeed to tear up a bit of the plaster+lath bedroom wall on the other side of the wall, then remove a brick or two. Strictly speaking, I’m supposed to get planning permission to mess with structural walls (& IIUC all brick walls are structural). Not sure if it’s realistically important to get planning permission to knock out a brick.

ciferecaNinjo,

That might be a good simple approach. I’ll look for outdoor plastic boxes that have a rubber seal. Maybe construction adhesive could attach tiles to it.

ciferecaNinjo,

Interesting concept. I’m glad to be aware of that option. However, I have very low confidence of any fitting that attaches to PEX. So I would still want the joint of the fitting relatively unburied as well. One side of the valve is galvanized pipe. I suppose I could replace the PEX with steel as well and then join the PEX to the steel under the showerpan. I’ll have to keep that in mind.

ciferecaNinjo,

When that happens, I register on whatever forum it was where someone said that just to say (necropost if needed) that I had the same question, searched it, and the search results brought me here where an asshole is saying to search it.

ciferecaNinjo, to fedia

How can external content be copied locally?

On Mastodon, you would simply paste the URL of the external post into the search field, then interact with the local copy. This does not work in fedia.

?

ciferecaNinjo, to kbin

What’s the difference in between & ? In the microblog tab, we can only add hashtags, which is simple enough. But when starting “threads” both options are there. There’s a field for tags & we still have the option of adding hashtags. Are they both equally searchable? If yes, should we search with or without the hash (“#”)? Why don’t the tags show up after posting?

ciferecaNinjo,

@chris sounds sensible. So the temptation is to go nuts adding all tags relevant to the field since they are concealed & only used for searching anyway. But then it must make Mastodon posts look junky.

BTW, I noticed tags can have spaces which then must somehow be represented on the Mastodon side. Camel case would be wise, but then on the side I guess there’d be uncertainty whether searches reach the spaced version & concatenated version.

pre, to reddit

Last day of the Reddit 3rd party apps still working.

This seems to be the best list of where all the subreddits have relocated to.

https://sub.rehab/

ciferecaNinjo,

@pre

I would normally say centralization makes perfect sense for a list of where to find alternative communities. But https://sub.rehab/ is a shit show. Drags my browser to a crawl (what could it possibly be doing in my client that is so computationally intensive that the mouse jerks around?)

Then when I try to add a record, it gives this vague error popup every time:

“Error We were unable to process your request. Sorry about that. Let us know in a GitHub issue”

MS Github? No thanks. Then these guys ignore submissions sent to their Mastodon account. I think they spend more time with their “buy me a coffee” tip jar than making the service usable. I suggest first checking these sites:

before resorting to

@thegpfury

ciferecaNinjo,

Community squatting can be favorable in some cases. Consider the bias of (for example) letting a representive of PepsiCo control a mag “m/Pepsi”. That moderator would censor anything critical of Pepsi. The narrative would be one-sided & pro-Pepsi. I would rather see m/Pepsi go to some random squatter than people from an official org.

ciferecaNinjo, (edited )

People will ignore subs with no posts and go to ones with actual content.

I doubt it. I looked for m/Brussels on fedia.io. Didn’t find it. My choice were:

  1. Create an acct somewhere that has m/Brussels so I could post; or
  2. Create m/Brussels & take on the burden and responsibility of moderation.

I favored option 2 because I’m not going to manually search hundreds of instances to see if it exists somewhere. is a shit show and had nothing for Brussels anyway. So if I had found an existing but empty community I would have simply posted there with a low expectation (as opposed to not posting). I would at least have some reassurance that the post would be seen by someone (the mod).

@lavender can’t stop u/wolf from creating m/henhouse on some other instance but she can preempt that on kbin.social. OTOH, case matters, so if m/javascript is taken I think someone can create m/JavaScript which is rather unfortunate.

ciferecaNinjo,

Well but the reality is that /more/ people will buy knock-off Pepsi if PepsiCo allows critical posts to be seen. When they censor for brand-protection, no one knows except the person they censored. Sure the quietly censored people (who likely already boycott Pepsi) will boycott but everyone else unwittingly enjoys their Pepsi-loving forum.

Unlike there is a mod log. That helps a little but probably not many users look at that.

Semi-random HTTP 500 errors everywhere around the site: some reproducible examples. (fedia.io)

Just about that. I know there's been important updates lately but I'm wondering if they are being pre-checked and how. I notice that there's various features around the site that throw HTTP 500 error pages randomly, or on certain generic inputs. To name a few examples:...

/kbin logotype
confusedbunny, to random

seems to be working well at the moment btw

ciferecaNinjo,

@confusedbunny Some of the 500 errors on Fedia are predictable & preventable. E.g. I tried posting a link where I filled in the title but left the body empty. It gave a 500 error. But adding anything to the body overcame the error.

ciferecaNinjo,

@confusedbunny When I click the gear icon, the mag icons & avatars are already defaulted to “no”. Yet I still see them.

ciferecaNinjo, (edited )

@akaxaka You replied to a fedia.io user to say to post on kbin.social. We can only interact with some of the threads from here. Since fedia.io does not have a local copy of that Q&A thread, I could not reply to that thread. I’m a bit confused though because you seem to be a fedia user yourself. Don’t you have the same problem?

(edit) Ah, I see you have an account in both places. Most users would not, however.

ciferecaNinjo, (edited )

I will copy here the reply I wanted to give in the Q&A thread (since I could not write to kbin.social)

===8<-----------------------

READ THE WIKI FIRST.

Where is that¹? Are you referring to the iamamsterdam site? If so, it’s not a site you can depend on people visiting because it’s not open to everyone. It’s in an exclusive walled garden. It works for some people but others get the attached screenshot. (hopefully it’s attached.. the “upload” button seems to have no effect)

  1. Both the rules and the Q&A thread direct people to read an unreferenced wiki. The URL should be given in both places.
