Will the Mastobrits please converge on a hashtag for the July 4th election? Kthksby.

Candidates:

@timbray its referred to here as the "general election", so most likely to be I'd surmise

@mpjgregoire @timbray I understand that, didn't say it was my choice, just that its most likely thru weight of numbers to rest at , few will consider the global reach I'm sure …

@daringfireball because I know you'll refer to this post in years to come … measurement of 11" iPad Pro should be 5.3mm, otherwise its not thinner than iPod ;)

The Magic Keyboard update is fine, I guess, but it would have been the perfect opportunity to add a USB port and/or a secondary battery. iPad’s 10 hour battery life isn't that impressive when the average MacBook gets twice that now

craigmorgan,
@craigmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I'm also amazed that they added to the confusion by making the new magic keyboard for latest Pro models only, at least the Air will work still on the older magic keyboard

After the disruption from the nightly build on Monday, I began experimenting with both @phanpy and @elk, alternate Web interfaces for Mastodon.

While is quite nice with always-available mouse-based back navigation, it doesn't seem to support either multi-column views or auto-refreshing timelines.

So, is a much better fit for my use case. However, it suffers the same limitation sorting notifications as the current unfixed nightly build, i.e. no quick-access filter bar.

1/4

craigmorgan,
@craigmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@lisamelton if you use the keyboard shortcuts then that is just a simple keypress away, I navigate with j/k and then b or l for boost/like … very smooth and natural if you're so inclined ;) If you've not discovered the shortcuts, just type ? to see the map

craigmorgan,
@craigmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@lisamelton ah, ok, no go then. Personally I like the clutter free experience, but understand that it does obscure UI that some might want to see on each post and be direct to utilise.

As to disabilities I'd hazard its a wash as there are probably as many people with preferred keyboard interaction (ie. visually restricted) as motion-limited for mousing.

Maybe an option to fatten the UI content might be in phanpy's future with the appropriate cajoling.

Not a fan that the betting odds setting in Apple’s new Sport app was to •show• them by default. If betting needs to be available at all (it doesn’t, IMO) it should be off by default.

craigmorgan,
@craigmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@finestructure agreed, off by default but I'd have allowed a first run dialog that offered to enable it for those who want it, bad choice by Apple IMHO

I'm missing something with the new indoor cycling features in watchOS 10. I tried it with a Schwinn IC4(800IC), which is a recommended bike for Fitness+. It connected right away and data streamed over, but even at the smallest possible wheel size it thought I was going over 75mph (bike indicated 13mph). Cadence data was perfect but I can't seem to find how to tell it that I'm not a world record speed cyclist.

Anyone else tried this on another stataionary bike or know what I'm doing wrong?

A screenshot from the Fitness+ Frequently asked questions indicating that Schwinn IC bikes are recommended.
A screenshot from watchOS 10 indicating that a 12” wheel was selected, this was the smallest possible.
A screenshot from the workouts app showing a 76.5 MPH cycling speed.

craigmorgan,
@craigmorgan@mastodon.social avatar

@_Davidsmith never seen a Schwinn IC4, but I doubt that a 12" wheel setup is appropriate, cadence, etc will be by sensor, but speed is prob estimate against wheel size, is it expecting a ~26" wheel to be declared ...

For the next step in my design journey I wanted to tackle a slightly more complicated UI, so I have rebuilt Widgetsmith's weather app into a design which fits on visionOS. This process was actually simpler than I had originally feared.

It seems like if you have built an iOS SwiftUI app using good general conventions then it is mostly just the colors and navigation chrome which needs to be revamped.

I broke down my process here: https://www.david-smith.org/blog/2023/07/12/design-notes-40/

    Oof, wasn't expecting this big of an idle power difference. Wonder if its the fancy PCIe switch. Kind of funny that the high end 2013 is listed as lower idle usage than the 2023 (though I don't believe its actually true, the 2013 idles a lot higher for me).

    @paul got to be PSU sizing to cover the PCI slot draw, 6x heavy draw cards over the system will do that ...
