Welcome to “The De-Google Project”, in which my family starts to work on lessening our dependence on Big-Tech services: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2024/03/09/DeGoogling

@timbray a vote for @organicmaps as an OSM based mapping solution … well worth a look

@timbray

My suggestions I have used:

  • Gmail -> Proton mail
  • Google docs -> Libre Office
  • Google search -> DDG
  • Safari -> Firefox
  • WhatsApp etc. -> Signal

And the following I gather are good;

  • Dropbox -> pCloud or syncthing

@timbray It's surprising that e-mail isn't a line in your table. I presume you already use something other than Gmail?

Switching away from Google search is quick and easy, and you won't look back.

Good luck!

@timbray Email seems to be well supported by most ISPs/hosting services. It seems like IMAP really works and is interoperable. Delivery is another matter; I have my email at a boutique ISP and email I send to gmail often ends up in spam folders if it’s delivered at all. (Even with DKIM/SPF set up properly.) For calendar/contacts, CalDAV and CardDAV don’t interoperate as well. My ISP has servers for those but they just don’t work, at least with Mac and iOS clients. Still looking for alternatives.

@timbray Besides my https://karl-voit.at/apps-I-am-using/ I'd recommend:

Dropbox->Syncthing.net
Maps->OSMAnd(roid)
Browser->FF for many reasons
Search->DDG or startpage.com
Discover music->good old Internet + terrestrial radio

@timbray I was considering Plex, then had a look at the amount of data gathering they do (at least from the client side). It’s a lot. The rest of their business model also rubs me the wrong way.

@HerbT Got a link to more on that subject? I'd like to like Plex.

@timbray I’ve been doing something similar. A Google Workspace replacement is a big missing piece for me too.

@timbray ABRP should be the better EV mapping app, though I don’t know where it’s map data comes from -maybe the apple/google device maps are what you get with it’s routing on top

@stevel I don't like it. It assumes that all the chargers are working and has very aggressive assumptions about charging speed and so on. For that, I rely entirely on PlugShare, which BTW has a nice Android Auto app.

And here’s the first De-Google Project field report, on playing the music that’s at home when I’m not at home.
