Recommendations for good (and preferably cheapish) own-domain providers, anyone? As far as I know the consensus is still that running your own is prohibitively difficult for reputation reasons, but do correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually a hard personal problem for me: I'm genuinely bitter and upset about how few people my age don't seem to care about digital freedoms (and therefore don't use things that build them up, like the fediverse or open source software). Is it a generational thing tied in with the slow decline in computer literacy in the past decade or two? It feels so strange to me that one of the people I've connected to the most when discussing these things is my 30+ year older boss.

@riley I see the same thing a lot; part of it for me seems to come down to people no longer caring about what's going on inside. People see tech and tech-enabled services as black boxes that just do a thing, and have no inclination to think about how it works at all, analogous to owning a car and not only not poking around in the engine but also never pumping the tyres because "that's too complicated, I'm not a mechanic"!

Well, I've farted around enough with my blog's layout and theme, I'd better get to writing.

But before I do. Should I add an optional "Dark Mode" CSS?

@Edent prefers-color-scheme is very handy for this!

Oh, nice, the htmx folks have a new book out:

(Kitten¹ has native support for htmx.)

@aral I'm probably massively behind the times here, but reading this is actually the first time I'd heard of Hyperview, and oh my god this seems amazing

@notjustbikes To be fair, your experience is probably slightly different here by virtue of being on your own instance, where federated connections to other instances are inevitably weaker than they would be on a larger instance. That's not necessarily a bad thing - some people enjoy that - but it'll have an impact here that's important not to overlook.

Bit disappointing to see the official Facebook account spreading the common misunderstanding that GDPR requires consent as the only legal basis for processing: https://www.facebook.com/100044427099680/posts/pfbid037wGSnbmJj3v5B6eAYg2kHoAi4n131PKMT7qugnGcPQL48Xanx2Ra6xy5NSa2VwNNl/
