Ok, I have spun up my own single-person Mastodon instance so I guess I’ll follow a migration guide and 🤞 I’ll see y’all on the other side?

(Masto.host makes hosting a Mastodon instance really easy, and is accepting signups again, so if you want to be in control of your own federation destiny, it’s not hard.)

This is my line in the sand: I will pass on having anything to do with social media where my attention and my data are the product.

That’s how Meta and Google and Reddit and all the big corpo-owned sites can afford to subsidize the services they use to “hook” you, the Product.

I have hosted my own email for years. Hubby has been having good success with a paid search engine so I’m gonna switch to them and say bye bye Google, whose results have been getting worse and worse.

I own my attention.

dachary,

@plaindocs

It’s Kagi: https://kagi.com

I haven’t used it yet but hubby has been using it for a few months and pays for the most expensive plan because he does a lot of searches. I’m planning to get set up with it today.

dachary, to random

Oh poop.

Things have gone very wild overnight in my part of the Fedi and I need to find a new instance.

Talked with hubby and he does not plan to defederate from Meta by default.

Guess it’s time to spin up a single-person instance for me! Just how I wanted to spend my day.

dachary, to random

I have been very happy on mstdn.social and think stux and his team do an amazing job.

But I am seriously considering moving to a smaller instance that is willing to defederate from any server that Meta brings into the Fediverse.

Hubby has been running a small instance for our friend group, and I haven't made an account there yet. But maybe this will be my incentive to move.

(But I don't wanna flood their local feed with all the dev talk I follow 🤔)

Spent a day in my old stomping grounds in Cambridge with @bronzehedwick, our coworker Marissa, and some of Chris’s friends for his birthday and it was utterly delightful. Thanks for the good times!

dachary,

@starshaped

I has an envy! I haven't been to Cambridge since pre-pandemic. I definitely miss some stuff out there.

Glad you had a nice day!

Another day with SwiftUI:

Start: I did it just like the example and it's not working…

…research and more learning…

I understand all of what it's doing and why it's supposed to work and yet it doesn't

…hours later…

I understand nothing and I have no business doing this at all

…after a break…

I tried adding one additional thing to the UI and I'll be damned if it doesn't work 100% now! I'm fantastic :)

dachary,

@Drmarkpowell

Lolsob is the perfect emoji for this experience. I feel your pain. Congrats on getting it working!

dachary,

@Drmarkpowell Nice! That sounds awesome. I rarely work with ScrollView - List mainly meets my needs, which tend to be pretty simple. But I did see the improvements to ScrollView in some of the WWDC stuff. Glad the beta had a nice improvement for you!

I'm looking forward to using the new stuff, but tend to run behind in adoption. I never know whether an issue I have with new SwiftUI is a bug or “I’m holding it wrong." So I like to wait a bit to let braver folks than me find the rough edges 😁

Aaaand got my rain gauge talking to my weather sensor again! Super productive day so far.

I was going to start learning GraphQL so I could switch my PR Focus GitHub API calls to GraphQL and hopefully make fewer of them…

...but maybe I’ll just keep helping out those researchers in Hyrule.

We have lived in this house for 3 years. We had a wall-mounted paper towel holder at the old house that I loved, so brought it with. But couldn’t figure out where to put it here, and when we did decide, it required a little bit of extra work to mount it. So the paper towels have been sitting on the counter for 3 years.

Today, I cleaned off the counter to make room for incoming espresso machine. Paper towel holder got mounted!

Wow I love this thing.

Do the project to make your space better!

dachary,

@miguelgrinberg Sorry to hear things have gone this way for you! A friend's wife works at Twilio, and she has been hanging on but is feeling conflicted about it. Good for you for listening to your inner voice and doing what's right for you.

At MongoDB, we have been pretty consistent about evolving into a "developer data platform." If you see anything on our careers page that sounds good to you, let me know.

Good luck with your search for a better fit!

Good news: I am doing very important work discovering and activating lightroots all across the depths of Hyrule. No more researchers getting caught off guard when they run out of brightbloom seeds unexpectedly!

I have a love-hate relationship with side projects. I've done so many of them over the years but in the last ~decade they've tapered off. I don't seem to have the energy. I'm pretty sure I could make the time, but not the will to make use of it.

I also used to believe that maybe someday a side project could turned into a "thing" and become, I dunno, my entire life or something? I sort of wanted that. I still sort of do.

The problem is, I don't appear to have that kind of attention span?

dachary,

@bigzaphod
Fwiw I totally feel you on this thread. I have a boatload of ideas that fall along similar lines.

You know which ones I actually get done? The ones I want to use, for me. Preferably the ones I want to use daily. So I’m learning to focus on coding the things I want.

Sometimes, other people find them useful, too. My iOS app paid off my over-specced M1 laptop and Pro Display XDR. My upcoming macOS app may buy my next computer. No pressure to “make it big” tho.

dachary,

@bigzaphod I think my career as a freelance writer helped me set these expectations reasonably. I’d complete some unit of work and get a fixed amount of money, and hubby once characterized it as “writing a [foo].” One project wrote me my motorcycle. A project wrote me a new helmet. A project wrote me a stand mixer. Etc.

Small, non-essential purchases became funded with individual projects. So now I view my side projects along similar lines. Hey, I coded a MacBook!

Maybe I can code a VisionPro?

Thinking about suggesting to my boss to establish a Mastodon account, but a bit scared about how such an account would be received on the Fediverse…

It seems like companies posting stuff is often seen as invasive and bad here. Anyone have experience with stuff like that? Bad idea? Things to avoid?

Post would likely be “we did this fun thing at the office”, "we just made this new product”, “we attended conference X” and job postings.

dachary,

@uliwitness I suggested this to my work, too, and they told me that Mastodon is all about building a community and they don’t belong here as a “corporate” presence.

But they post all the time on Twitter and LinkedIn and I don’t wanna go to those sites to find out what we’re up to. I just wanna read about cool things we’re doing in some site where I am not the product. 🤷‍♀️

I have laughed out loud - and cried - SO MANY times listening to the Worlds Beyond Number podcast. Such incredible storytelling!

Apparently doggo does not like it when I cry. I just got to a very sad scene and he ended up barking at me for like 5 solid minutes because I was crying.

What I imagine he’s “saying”: “Why is your face leaking? That’s not right! Stop it! Why are you sniffling? Are you about to sneeze? Stop it!!! Sneezes not allowed!”

dachary, to random

Disclaimer: I am venting about a situation at work. I’m not authorized to discuss my employer’s policies and I am just venting.

Ok. We good?

I have been getting to my desk at 6:30-8am and have been there until ~7pm every day this week.

I have learned a new programming language and have taken over another SDK’s docs this year.

For BS Big Company reasons, I have been told not to expect an “Exceeds Expectations” in this P&G cycle.

Upsetting.

dachary,

I am a person who busts my butt to get things done. Maybe because I spent too many years as a contractor and my reputation was what grew my business, or maybe because I’m just a “yes” person and I like to make people happy, or whatever.

But I demonstrably produce a high level of high-quality output. I consistently get positive feedback from peers, stakeholders, and management. I am aggravated that stupid policies prevent recognizing my work.

dachary,

Oh, yeah, and I have gotten an “Exceeds Expectations” for every P&G cycle since joining the company.

I have not changed my work patterns in the last 6 months. If anything, I have stepped up to take over more surface area in a challenging environment.

So how is that less worthy of recognition than in prior P&G cycles?

dachary, to random

Yesterday was the first day since using my macOS app daily that I didn’t have some tweak I wanted to make at the end of the day. (Aside from GitHub pagination issues but I’m just gonna deal with that when I rewrite to use GraphQL.)

I probably should have spent time in Hyrule after doing brain-melty C++ work yesterday.

But instead, I worked on one of my WIP iOS apps. With new espresso machine inbound, I really want my bean tracking app in Test Flight so I can start using it!

@masukomi It’s kinda wild how many ways social media companies are finding to melt down their products.

Ooo it’s been a bit since I’ve had to use my “Delete derived data” alias. But I’ve gotta do it today because I have made Xcode very, very unhappy.

dachary,

Me: oh dear. Xcode is throwing an error on practically every line for a test that passed an hour ago.

…delete derived data…
…rm -rf build…
…mkdir build…
…cmake -G Xcode…
…open examples.xcodeproj
…build and run…

Ahh, there we go. Xcode is happy again.

Protip: when Xcode offers to “Fix” something by editing ostream, DON’T do it!

I don’t need that std::cout that badly…

I have navigated the 🐄💩 of Google Cloud and not only produced an event ticket, but provided that event ticked to a user unaffiliated with our co, AND have it not show up in test mode.

i could cry.

This should have been easy. I'm SO DONE WITH [CENSORED] mobile wallet ticket BS.

dachary,

@masukomi Congrats on your momentous achievement!

dachary, to random

Ooooooo looks like my payment has, in fact, cleared for my ridiculously extravagant espresso machine.

I’ve got a shipping notification for… something… but the package supposedly weighs 4lbs so that’s definitely not the machine. Maybe the Acaia Lunar scale and some other accessories?

Super psyched for 5-8 weeks from now! But that gives me plenty of time to clear the counter space I need for it, I guess.
