nivenly, to random

We've made some decisions regarding Haidra and Pachli as Nivenly projects. First up, Haidra: https://nivenly.org/blog/2024/04/15/haidra-decision/

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@nivenly I'm pleased with the decision, but discouraged by the commentary. For those of us who are fundamentally opposed to the nature of the project and not just with the way it was presented, it's upsetting to be treated like childish aggressors. (1/6)

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

It's also frustrating to be told that we somehow didn't make our concerns known "in the right place" during a period of time where direction was confusing, to put it mildly. Github, Discord, Mastadon replies, a forum? I made my concerns known on three of those four, as did others that I observed. (2/6)

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

These were all official channels of feedback, opened and operated by Nivenly leadership, and by the time the forum was decided on as the "REAL official" conversation space, I had already said what I intended to say in the other channels and didn't feel it was appropriate to go and spam it again elsewhere. (3/6)

I know you disagree with the opposition to Haidra, which is fine. And I tremendously appreciate that you didn't allow this disagreement to overshadow the sentiment of the membership, as you put it very eloquently. (4/6)

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

It is, however, disheartening to see those of us with legitimate opposition to Haidra and similar tools treated as petulant and childish for speaking up and making that opposition known to the best of our ability, and at the same time somehow as slackers for not engaging in a "deeper level of engagement". (5/6)

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

Finally, it's insulting to be dismissed as "the loudest minority", especially considering that those of us who are just "regular membership" have to work harder just to speak AS LOUD as leadership, who can place their personal opinions on Nivenly blogs. If you're looking to encourage Nivenly membership participation, then targeting and calling out the people you disagree with on the official blog is not a way to make us feel safe and welcome to engage. @aburka I mean, I don't get QUITE that from it. I think db0 and leadership do believe that the worst-case scenario is the Torture Nexus being solely controlled by corporate interests is the worst case, and also that it's not the Torture Nexus. (1/3)

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

I feel bad that db0 has gone through such stress over this, but also a fair amount of that stress was pretty much inevitable when your position boils down to "corporations are going to ruin artists' livelihoods anyway, so we may as well make sure ANYONE can ruin artists' livelihoods, not just the big players." Some people are going to strenuously object over that! (3/3)

One thing to keep in mind is that Biden is a right-wing President. Compare his politics, even when he was still just campaigning, to what is considered "the left" in the rest of the world, and it's obvious.

So we gotta stop being surprised when he makes awful right-wing choices and does awful right-wing shit. He's only LESS WORSE than Trump, he's not actually GOOD. Don't put your hopes on him suddenly being good.

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@ElleGray BIG SAME. I prep to survive at most a few weeks without power or similar, and to help those in my groups and community do the same. Anything more ambitious than that gets a pass from me.

@tess@mastodon.social avatar

I think consistently referring to counter-protestors as "zionists" is probably misleading; I suspect that while there may be many genuine zionists doing violence to pro-Palestine protestors, there are also probably a bunch of fascists mixed in there who are very much not "zionists" in the traditional sense (other than perhaps that Israel's continued existence provides a potential avenue to ethnically cleanse the US of Jews).

Using that broad brush actually plays into the fascists' agenda.

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@tess I'm sure we can all agree on "genocide enthusiasts."

many of you have seen me speak out against Thiel companies participating in Rust and NixOS development, but I don't think I ever clearly said why

as anyone who has opened and read my bio will know, I'm fine with the existence and use of weapons. no, what I have the problem with is imperialism; and Palantir and Andruil, and their acceptance, is currently the means by which it's capturing our communities

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@whitequark Some science youtubers I used to respect recently released videos where they work with Anduril, showing off new weapons systems in a "golly-gee-willikers isn't it neat how they can track and shoot down drones, that'll for sure keep us safe! let's not pay attention to anything else these companies might do and instead, hey, look over here! isn't the science involved just so NEAT?!?"

And it's like... you fuckin' patsies, you're bein played you IDIOTS.

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@whitequark If I make screwdrivers, I may not realistically be able to prevent bomb makers from buying those screwdrivers and making bombs with them, sure.

But at a MINIMUM, I'm sure as fuck not going to accept funding or input from the bomb makers to try to ensure that there are "better screwdrivers for making bombs with" in the world. That bar shouldn't be too high.

In short, I agree with you and support your decisions.

    gripe: the AWS terraform provider reports space utilization for EFS (NFS-as-a-service) volumes as attributes, so the resulting state file is always, permanently, out of date

    this has no practical consequences, but if you're storing state locally via git, it produces a lot of spurious diffs

    danhulton,
    @danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

    @owen Really sad about that venture backed attribute. I really enjoyed the week or so I spent kicking the tires.

    I think a lot of the "infra needed to get started" is largely because the problem space being modeled (highly available multi-service systems) is complex and has a lot of moving parts. Like I don't think I've ever seen a simple Terraform stack either.

    But you can't wash off VC money, so 🤷‍♂️

    danhulton,
    @danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

    @owen I think I might have misunderstood what you meant by "infra", and on reflection, I agree with you.

    @owen I mean, I agreed with you before, but now I agree with you unreservedly.

    If anybody is thinking of building a new computer and putting Windows on it, you can get a Windows 11 pro license for $20 on Woot today.

    This is the only way I buy Windows licenses. I refuse to give them $200 for the "pro" version of a bundle of tracking software with an OS on top.

    Also if you're using Windows you should use Pro, because Microsoft made the greedy/irresponsible decision to hobble Bitlocker in the home edition.

    danhulton,
    @danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

    @joby They'd have to pay ME to use it at this point, but regardless, I do completely support this post. Absolutely, Microsoft should make as little money as possible from the people who (for whatever reasons, many of them very likely very valid) feel they still have to use this terrible OS.

    aud, to opensource

    uggghhhhhh I finally have to license something

    I’m not naive; a license is as effective as pissing in the wind if you don’t have the means to enforce it. Still, any recommendation on licenses to make it as difficult as possible for people like Palmer Luckey or dtolnay to benefit from it, in general??

    Permissive is good, I don’t care whether it matches a libertarian definition of “open”.

    danhulton,
    @danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

    @aud You could always go with a modified MIT license, with a clause similar to the one preventing Anish Kapoor from using the Pinkest Pink: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/artist-only-person-banned-using-worlds-pinkest-pink-180961464/

    i assume (i hope) this changes after you know how to play the game, but reading magic cards always feels like im trying to decipher an ancient riddle in a language i dont speak

    danhulton,
    @danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

    The first couple would make sense, but then you'd read one that seemed to do what another one did but referred to something differently, and it wouldn't be clear if two types of cards were equivalent in context, or if an action described differently was the SAME action and could both trigger a desired effect, etc. (2/3)
