Questions for software engineers about estimates. Feel free to answer any of these in any order.

Have you ever had an explicit conversation about how to estimate projects? How did you learn?

If you feel that you were never taught the skill in any real sense, what do you feel you're doing at work when you're asked for estimates? Are you making it up? Have you developed your own personal guidelines?

On average, how confident are you in your own estimates? How do you measure success?

@janl @polotek when I’m working with teams that have little experience in estimation I ask them to work very strictly on one-week sprints due to point #4 you make. If a team can’t estimate what they can get done in a week, there’s no way they can estimate months at a time. By enforcing a short interval they have the chance to start learning how to estimate with smaller item sizes first— after which they can start increasing their skill.

Grandma names were pretty great in the old days.

Saw a Mabel from @Shanitoba, and an Edna from @skatem and I had a Winifred.

Anyone have a classic grandma (or great-grandma) name?

@ottaross My Grannie’s name was Elsie.

I feel like a spammer for showing up so many places in the past 24 hours and saying “yo, the thing you say no one has built: we’ve built it, it’s right here, we’re paying maintainers every month”.

Tidelift isn’t perfect but it is real and targeting exactly these kinds of problems.

@gvwilson I don’t know; if you stay will it be trouble?

The most impactful workplace skills I rely on today almost without exception date back to when I did low paid service jobs.. Like the skills that enable other people to be more effective

If we hired folk with that kind of background in the tech industry through apprenticeships instead of requiring degrees / tech experience I can only imagine how much better performing we'd be lol

@sue yup I wrote about that years ago but have never convinced any org to try it:

Lit reviewing "developer experience" as a construct and earliest thing I found in initial search is from Fagerholm and Münch(2012):

F. Fagerholm and J. Münch, "Developer experience: Concept and definition," 2012 International Conference on Software and System Process (ICSSP), Zurich, Switzerland, 2012, pp. 73-77, doi: 10.1109/ICSSP.2012.6225984.

It doesn't reference any existing literature on developer experience. Google ngram also shows a HUGE spike in "developer experience" mentions in 2013.

@KFosterMarks PEOPLEWARE was written in 1987 and I don’t know if it uses the exact term but it’s definitely about how the developer experience impacts outcomes.

The same model for success has been applied to everything. THAT MAKES NO SENSE.🙄

barsoomcore,
@barsoomcore@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 I really feel this. In particular, everything has gotten transformed into a MARKET which means everything leads to monopolies. It’s crushing out all possibility.
