I’ve been looking at Obsidian as an alternative for Evernote. Looks like I will be able to migrate my various notes reasonably easily, but it’s the document management use-case I am struggling with.

I need a way to take pdf scans, ocr them to make them searchable, search them, and have a good UI to flick between the search results.

Evernote was great at this.

I allowed Apple Reminders to categorise my shopping list automatically.

It thinks Ribena should be in the Meat section.

Edit: It thinks “Jacket potatoes (little ones)" belongs in the Baby Care section 🤣

Installing Debian. Haven't done this for years.

Look at this new flashy GUI install process!

I think I would have had a much better night sleep had I chosen unencrypted filing system while installing Debian.

I did stumble across one of @neil ‘s blog posts at about 1am while on my side quest to have it decrypt on boot without me typing in a pass phrase.

Went to Ikea last night and decided to have an email receipt for a change, mainly to see how their “scan your receipt to open the barrier” process would work.

Except their on screen keyboard only has the symbols a-z, 0-9, -, _, ., and @

Paper it is then.

I have been thinking a lot about how my digital estate should be wrapped-up if the proverbial Number 73 bus comes along (which would be a miracle given the state of Bristol's bus services).

I have started writing an emergency information pack describing:

  • Financial affairs
  • Insurance
  • Household utilities
  • Legal contacts (Will)
  • Cat related things

I really miss Maplin.

I miss being able to go into a shop and buy 3 meters of cable just by looking at the cable and going “that's the right size for me”.

There are some frustrations with driving an EV.

When I visit London, I usually park at Westfield White City. £12 to park for the day, relatively secure parking, easy to get to, toilets, coffee, etc. Unfortunately their destination chargers were completely dead.

Returning to the car I only had 25% to get all the way back to Bristol. The car suggested the Park Royal Superchargers, so off I went.

Halfway through charging they tripped out, something I have never had happen before.

Today is the cat's annual vaccination day. My next task is to get the cat boxes in from the garage (without letting the cats escape through the back door) and also grab the gardening gauntlets.

The biggest issue I have with Reddit's new direction, and a user base considering jumping ship, is that Reddit has become an absolute treasure trove of actually useful information. I regularly start searches with “reddit” for tech, DIY, and general life skills.

It cuts out all the dross of AI generated websites, the 20 minute long youtube explanation videos for something that should be a bullet list, and connects you with people who are (probably) experts or have real life experience.

I can never get through the UK e-passport gates without it saying to seek assistance. I told the Border Patrol person this and he said, “ah” and then, “you’ll never be able to do anything about this, but the eGates will never work for you, and I can’t tell you why”.

So I guess my name is on some sort of watch list.

If there is one place I would like to see an LLM deployed, it would be Trip Advisor. They need a way to show me reviews written by people who have the same standards and expectations as I do.

I am currently reading reviews of a hotel we are going to for an extended-family holiday. Proper package job with all that that entails. The reviews are very mixed and my expectations are set accordingly. But what I really want is a flag on each review that tells me the expectations of the reviewer.

Post Incident Review

Issue: No biscuits arrived in the weekly shop.

Root cause: Dan forgot to add biscuits to the basket.

Impact: No biscuits available at 3.30pm when Dan wanted a biscuit.

One week with and I am enjoying playing around with some of the integrations.

I am particularly enjoying the integration with Octopus Energy to real-time track my energy use (I have the Octopus Mini which live streams data from my smart meter).

As an amateur photographer, and only from my own opinion:

  1. All photos that you see in print or on screen are processed in some way. There is no such thing as 'no filter’.

  2. iPhone and Android cameras make all sorts of decisions about the final result. What you see on screen is likely a composite of several frames and several lenses/sensors. The phone is literally manipulating the image you see.

  3. I take many photos where arms, hands, and fingers look unnatural.

Is anyone from Octopus Energy on Mastodon?

I have questions as to why the octopus I received recently has dilated pupils and can't sit straight…

On the left is the octopus that arrived a few years ago. On the right is the one from last week.

  1. Sit at desk
  2. Sit on futon
  3. Sit at desk
  4. Sit on futon
  5. Unfold futon
  6. Lie on futon

More often than not I come away from a hotel thinking that I could design a hotel room far better than whoever they employed to design the one I just stayed in.

It's often the simple things like:

  • Why do I have to ferret around to find a plug socket near the bed?
  • Why can't I hang my towels up near the shower and in such a way that they will dry properly?
  • Why is the door to the toilet frosted and/or has see-through areas (!)
  • What is this useless phone doing on the bedside table?
