I really want to like Passkeys, it’s the sort of thing that on paper sounds very nice and workable

and then you get into the real world where like, you’ve got three password-filling options for various reasons and they all try to be the thing that holds your passkeys as well, and it all falls apart in new and exicitng ways, bringing problems you never had with passwords or TOTP codes

Really disappointed with Assistive Access for iOS 17. Even to get in and out of this mode on iPhone SE is basically broken because the passcode screen isn't displayed properly. Boo.

A place where I would direct Apple's attention to for designing for dementia specifically is user research on how folks gradually stop using their phones. Prolonging someone's ability to use their phone grants a great amount of agency and belonging if they can, e.g., still Facetime their family.

If it can be done ethically, pinpointing events where this happens and mitigating those might get them somewhere.

I think I’ve put my finger on what coming back to the UK feels like. If an actual nation state could be suffering from clinical depression, this is what it would look like: Everything is slowly going to shit; the country seems to see no future for itself; it’s making decision after decision that is self neglect bordering on self harm; quite possibly the most unpopular government to be removed by democratic vote rather than bloodshed is about to lose an election by a cataclysmic margin, and when the opposition, who are set to clean up, are asked what they’re going to do differently, the answer is a shrug followed by, “nothing”.

And people here more or less accept it, because boiling frogs and suchlike, but then you go elsewhere (no, America, not you, sit back down), and it’s like the colour returns to the world and you didn’t even realise it was missing.

I'm old enough to remember when the "Back" buttons in web browsers used to work reliably. You'd get exactly one page transition back in history for every press of the button.

Can we bring that back, please?

Wifeface was talking to a lad in Halfords who was changing her car lightbulbs and they got onto the subject of festivals. He said he was going to one in June and was being a bit coy about it but mumble mumble it's more of a hackers thing. Straight away she goes Oh, is it EMFCamp? My husband is going.

So if you're mid 20s with long hair, work in Wrexham Halfords and you're off to @emf then HMU. You're not the only geek in the village 😉

She phoned me to tell me that. I hate phone calls.

The real story isn’t that someone photoshopped a picture.

The story is that people are so damn nosey about other peoples lives that someone felt compelled to try and release a photo and got photoshop out to try and pacify the nosey people who can’t leave people to have a private life.
