If you're interested in the health of the community, a few stats for you: in the last week, RStudio was opened 3.5 million times (i.e. we logged that many checks for an update); in the last month, ~650k people visited a tidyverse website and ~65k people used posit.cloud; in the last year, >2 billion packages were downloaded.

@jennybryan @jameshwade @hadleywickham Agreed. The numbers are a strange sort of comfort (on an human level), like knowing there are lots of ships at sea, but not the VHF frequency to find them. (Apparently I'm feeling nautical and nostalgic this morning) ⛴️

One thing I’m appreciating since branching out into #rustlang and using #data.table at work is that immutable data by design is an incredibly useful simplification that reduces cognitive load and eliminates large classes of bugs in #rstats.

I can’t recommend packages that try to give users the power of mutability. While the benchmarks are seductive, you don’t gain time because of the new weird bugs and constant struggles over what parts of your API should allow mutability.

@yuvipanda @pistonblown @abnv I had a 1980 CB 750 that we got for free for getting it out of someone's garage (so, cost me the $40 we paid a bunch of guys from a nearby football team we saw walking by), and a 1984 Lambretta li150. A combination of reading manuals (which are like 50% accurate and 50% wildly misleading) and being taken under the wing of the guys who owned a vintage motorcycle shop in DC where I lived at the time got me there 🏍

@yuvipanda @pistonblown @abnv my first running bike purchase was an awesome dual sport, a 2005 F650GS Dakar that had been repossessed. But, coming off of a knee injury, and even with lowering links on it, it was a huge bike for me. Would LOVE to at least do a trip on a dual sport out here, though.

(1) Remember when so many of you complained that Mastodon is broken because quote posts aren't enabled and I (and others) tried to explain that the problem is that they are used to harass? Here it is. Day 1 on Threads.

(2) If you're inclined to post on here making light of the situation? I'll probably be muting you. Sorry. But this isn't a game.

I've unfortunately been caught up in the layoffs @Posit, along with some incredible colleagues. It was a short but sweet ride, and I'm grateful to the #tidyverse team for the amazing experience. I've learned a ton and we had started some great work in the package development education space. I'm sad not to continue it in this capacity, but am still passionate about it. I will still be teaching the workshop at posit::conf(), so hope to see you there!

🖤 I’m bummed, but so grateful for the 5½+ yrs w/ my incredible team.
