    @schwa @GeekAndDad Equally accurate as other means of estimation.

    daveanderson,
    @daveanderson@mastodon.social avatar

    @schwa @GeekAndDad If the software had been written before that exactly matched the needs, it would be immediately available because software duplication costs are negligible. (Unlike building a house.)

    The flip side to instant duplication is that, because software can be reshaped infinitely, any deviation from existing functionality can require an unpredictable amount of effort to resolve.

    @ctietze hello! Have you ever used/made/ thought about a Swift wrapper package for JavaScriptCore?

    Does Foundation provide an asynchronous/await API for filesystem IO operations?

    @krzyzanowskim @pepicrft @mattiem

    > [The SwiftNIO 2.63.0] release includes a new module, NIOFileSystem, for asynchronously interacting with the filesystem. The module isn't yet considered public API and is therefore available via the _NIOFileSystem product. We plan to stabilise the API soon and welcome feedback in the meantime.

    https://github.com/apple/swift-nio/releases/tag/2.63.0

    From looking at https://github.com/apple/swift-nio/commit/f80c69f84b90874432aafd76c240fef1aaa01272 it does not appear to depend on the NIO async model.

I’m a bit partial to “A Plow Named Sue”, “Aaron Brrr, Sir” and “Oh For Sleet’s Sake” although “Just Scraping By” is getting funnier and funnier the more I sit with it. https://www.dot.state.mn.us/nameasnowplow/

    It's nearly 3:00 am here in Calgary. Haven't been up this late in a long while. But I just couldn't put down my Mac until I was finished this one coding puzzle. After many tries I finally got it working. I can finally sleep now without thinking about it all night. 😴

    Glad you solved it!

    can be so much cleaner and more concise than . Really digging the new concurrency syntax with and for working with . Now if only I could convert my entire project to this. But 16 years of development has lots of legacy code. But I am slowly modernizing some of it and writing new stuff in Swift and SwiftUI.

    @tapforms is the optionality of the return value useful or would a ?? [] be an improvement (where this is used)?

    The has-values/empty/nil tri-state nature of an optional array can be more states than necessary.

    daveanderson,
    @daveanderson@mastodon.social avatar

    @tapforms I would rather not have the additional code to deal with the optional.

    I realized today that I now consider almost all web pages found via search engine as likely ML-generated content (likely created as a vehicle for ads) and not to be trusted without additional validation.

    daveanderson,
    @daveanderson@mastodon.social avatar

    That doesn’t mean they are just that I don’t trust that they aren’t.

    daveanderson,
    @daveanderson@mastodon.social avatar

    In the before times when the web was filled with content created by people trying to be genuinely helpful, it was glorious to find obscure (and accurate) answers on a page that luckily was indexed.

    daveanderson,
    @daveanderson@mastodon.social avatar

    There have always been rougher corners on the internet, and the risks were often quite obvious.

    Now that so many search results are machine-generated content designed to match every possible query, I wonder where the helpful, legitimate, information will collect and be shared.

    I just saw the snow plow Betty Whiteout! I don’t know where it was going since we (ominously) don’t have snow but it was my first time seeing one of the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation “named plows” in the wild. Squee!

    daveanderson,
    @daveanderson@mastodon.social avatar

    @superbetsy Why are the plows buzzing around if there’s no snow? Salting to mitigate ice/frost? Or did you get some snow?

    daveanderson,

    @superbetsy Oh, that sounds miserable! Better Call Salt needs to swing by your place and make amends.

    My current argument with the void: just because a piece of music is in a minor key does not mean it is a Halloween song. By that logic, ABBA’s entire catalog would qualify.

    Related: new business proposal… ABBA-themed haunted house.

    the worst thing restful api design did to us was convince people that http status codes were sufficient for returning errors.

    if you're returning http 400 and a null body, don't be surprised if a gang of fe devs eggs your house and slashes your tires.

    daveanderson,
    @daveanderson@mastodon.social avatar

    @ghorwood I’d still take a 4xx over a 200 with an error body.

    Today was the Minnesota Fiber Festival: the premiere event for hand spinners, felters, and all other fiber enthusiasts. I will not be answering any questions about what I bought, the number of different wools and fibers I bought, or how much I spent. I’m happy to answer questions about this rabbit I met.

    daveanderson,

    It has come to my attention that to truly become one of the aunts in Practical Magic I need to learn how to stop killing plants. I already have looms and spinning wheels and umbrella swifts and lots of cast iron and long graying curly hair and I make charcoal soap like they do in the books, so I’m almost there. I guess I should try to learn to like cats, too.

    daveanderson,

    @superbetsy TIL “umbrella swift”

    Also, I’m not sure it’s worth it if you have to learn to like cats.
