Today I broke up with Amazon. My son lost my (cracked and handed down) kindle on a flight and, after deregistering the device, I can't access my content outside an app.

More than 10 years of book purchases locked up in drm.

I figured a workaround, but this won't work for anything published from this year on.

So that's it I guess. Digital isn't forever and I've relied too much on increasingly expansive walled gardens.

There's no perfect alternative, just better ones.

Time to change.

One thing I struggle with after 5 years in America is that when I am there, the parts of me that are so vibrant and alive here in Southeast Asia are dormant there. It’s almost like I have to learn to be a different person. I listen to Indonesian podcasts, watch Thai bands on YouTube, text in Singlish, Manglish with anyone who understands. Even though I’m very ‘assimilated’ it still feels like a SEA-sized hole in my soul. It’s like I’ve split into two people: one here, one there.

@skinnylatte I lived in Vietnam, Lao and surrounds for the bulk of my twenties and relocated from oz to nz immediately pre pandemic. Leaving copies is an evocative metaphor - it's exactly how I feel. Especially when I come back and leave again.

So people love or hate durians, but I think most people haven't been introduced to durians properly. There's many different types, with different textures / flavors, even smell. I don't love durian the way people from home do, but I can appreciate an excellent one from time to time. My favorite type is 'Red Prawn'. You can't get it outside of Malaysia/ SG. Many growers have farm to table cafes for durians and it's great & they even run durian classes

@skinnylatte have been through Singapore quite a lot as a tourist - this is the first time with our 7 year old though - would love any food recs! I love spicy and interesting, we lived in Lao, Thailand and Vietnam for a bit and ate everything.

    @drjulie_b @ojala my experience is citation managers with word are buggy and a pain for formatting and collaborative work. I just cite manually or use placeholders and fix it in the final proof.

    @ojala @drjulie_b when it works it works but I've had more than a few documents break and need major surgery due to citation managers. YMMV.

    Wellington, don't sleep on FJ Kung Fu Noodles on Courtney Place.

    Looks like a generic Bain Marie joint but the noodles and dumplings are legit.

    Langzhou noodles and spicy wide dry noodles are standout delicious.
