Have had to read a lot of book reviews in academic journals this week for reasons.

Amazing how many of them can be summarised as:

"this book is factually accurate but also makes our area of study seem too interesting to normal people. Not recommended."

davecarter,
@davecarter@mastodon.nz avatar

@garius my favourite piece of reviewer feedback ever was 'this reads like popular journalism'.... We made it more difficult to read and they published it with no substantive revisions.

whoooaaaa

softube just announced a ridiculous little bundle sale:

https://www.softube.com/essentials-collection

for $49, you get:

  • model 84 synthesizer (killer juno 106 model)
  • tape (i use this constantly)
  • wasted space (excellent shitty reverb)
  • fet compressor
  • british class a (console emulation)

not affiliated, just a (big) fan; softube's stuff always sounds very alive and real to me 🏴‍☠️

davecarter,
@davecarter@mastodon.nz avatar

@hilljam the only.things I can see using are tape and wasted space
On tape.side I have ik tapes (heft), chow dsp (clean), sketch cassette (lofi) and hornet (low CPU). I also have korneff alesis verb and psp 244/245 (wasted maybe in the same space). Are either of these dramatic standouts?

One of the last things I use zuckerbook for is the mushroom hunting group that's very generous with info and ID help.

Is there an equivalent here?

We have a voracious 7 yr old reader who can happily rip through 3-400 pages in a few days.

Very into dragons / fantasy. Also adventure novels / mysteries / any compelling narrative driven stuff.

Would love age appropriate (ish) book recommendations.

Its hardly surprising that women in the music industry have just as tough a time as women in any other sector....

There is nothing to suggest in the history of music that somehow this particular creative sector would have a better record on sexism, exploration & discrimination than any other part of our social economy.

Its always been a 'boys club'... so not sure this report will prompt any concerted action, but at least we cannot say we didn't know.

@ChrisMayLA6 @francis speaking only for local NZ context, this kind of work has resulted in concerted efforts by sector towards safer and more inclusive professional environments.

Not there but doesn't feel hopeless.

Here's a tricky one for you - what's the ethical imperative ('right thing to do') when you see a shoplifter?

I was at the supermarket today and a young kid ducked into line then walked straight out the door with their shopping.

I tend to think it's none of my busines and the supermarket can look after themselves; but what about a dairy / corners shop?

I tracked onto magnetic tape for the first time in forever yesterday on a well maintained but disused Studer A800.

It's really magic.

I took the input and repro feeds straight into the computer and a/b-ing the two was ear opening (as was the relative gain-staging)/

But more than a third of the 24 tracks weren't working for some reason or another and a couple more went funny while tracking.

No real point here, other than I think I want an 8 / 16 track and I probably shouldn't get one.

@mxtthxw this was a super easy 3 takes live with 3 takes of vocals with good, but not fussy, musicians. Took all the work out of it.

I can dig mine out and phone demonif helpful.

davecarter,

@mxtthxw @apite apologies, didn't notice the 110v, just that it was in the UK.

Something cool will turn up.

davecarter,
@davecarter@mastodon.nz avatar

@mxtthxw @apite dynacords and effectors also interesting and possibly available your neck of the woods (again not worth reverb/eBay prices).

German and Japan eBay used to be the places for good stuff....

davecarter,
@davecarter@mastodon.nz avatar

@mxtthxw @apite yikes - I noticed the other day that my beat up script multi phaser pedal is going for 1.2k locally. That's more than I paid for a set of Telefunken preamps or a lomo bottle mic in the early aughts.

davecarter,
@davecarter@mastodon.nz avatar

@etherdiver @mxtthxw @apite the bottom fell out of the vintage guitar market here about then - especially for the interesting middle-ground stuff. But audio gear is still commanding silly prices.

We are an island a long way away though.

Any recommendations for nice Tape Echo style plugins under 50 credits I should try?

So far I've tested Cherry Audio Stardust 201, UAD Galaxy, Imaginando K7D, Softube Tube Delay, Waves HDelay, Softube Tape Echoes and Pulsar Echorec.

My current favourites are:
3. Softube Tape Echoes: slightly too clean Melos type echo
2. Pulsar Echorec: Nice Binson emulation

  1. UAD Galaxy: Much better Space Echo than the Cherry Audio version

davecarter,
@davecarter@mastodon.nz avatar

@mxtthxw @axwax I really like audio things outer space https://www.audiothing.net/effects/outer-space/

I have the Arturia Delay 201 and soundtoys in bundle - outer space gets used more for the space echo thing.

Also sketch cassette can make a boring delay very tapey ...

davecarter,
@davecarter@mastodon.nz avatar

@mxtthxw @axwax I don't think anyone's done a comp with the pedals? In my last studio (5 yes back) we had the V1 pedal and a line 6 rack unit and didn't need any plugins.

Audio / music folk - True 252 (modelled langevin eq) plug is on sale for $20USD.

I like everything kazrog put out - none of it's 'usual suspect' stuff - but this is particularly nice, has it's own sound, and always does something; even with small changes.

No affiliation, just dig it.

    @mxtthxw my wife's a public health researcher. She pointed straight to Spanish flu as an example of 'this is going to be drawn out and people will quickly stop caring and complying with common sense precautions so they can exercise individual freedoms at the expense of society'. All of this has happened before...
