Without clarifying, the barista made me a 16oz/48cl Americano and boy it turns out I have feelings about coffee sizing.

12oz/36cl is the right size for black coffee.

8oz/24cl is the right size for coffee with foamed milk.

I will not be taking questions.

Ongoing blind spot in coverage of the paperclip maximizer problem with AI: if you replace “superintelligent AI” with “humans”, and “maximizing paperclip production” with “maximizing profits”, its awfully hard to argue that we aren’t well on our way to doing this ourselves.

It’s weird to watch international baking shows and they keep putting tonka bean into things and I have to look it up because I’ve never heard of them and it’s been illegal in the US since the 1950s for dubious toxicity reasons.

daveshea,

@mathowie it’s wild the FDA is fine with cinnamon’s coumarin % but not tonka. You’re missing out, it’s such a fun spice – great microplaned into/over desserts, pancakes, whatever. If you’re ever on Granville Island when in town you can find jars of beans at South China Seas.

I started learning Mandarin with Duolingo a month ago. So far I can count to ten poorly. I’m realistic, this is going to be a very long slow effort.

daveshea,

@Luke I’m actually finding pronunciation the harder part so far. But that’s a shallower learning curve, the tens of thousands of hanzi characters waiting for me will take a lifetime no doubt.

The challenge with being data driven is that while having data means you're informed, understanding the data means you have knowledge.

Lots of organizations fail to turn their information into knowledge which ends up leading to suboptimal decisions. Understanding the why of the data is often overlooked.

daveshea,

@carnage4life it’s crazy how undervalued qualitative research generally is across the industry.

I’ve been running dark mode for long enough that light mode feels foreign to me now. Which is a bit of a liability for being able to make good design decisions, so I’ve spent the past month or two allowing my devices to automatically swap based on time of day.

And yet light mode still feels uncomfortable. 🤷

I use the zoom chat window to cover up the faces of people who are eating on the call. Am I alone here?

daveshea,

@Luke @bw I like to think that that would stop the open-mouthed gum chewer who I’ve needed to have calls with occasionally, but I know better.

Sure a few parts of it are dated now, but I’m really not okay with The Matrix turning 25 in March.

So what’s everyone’s favourite Instagram alternative?

(I only grabbed Threads at launch to check out the UX. I immediately deleted it and have absolutely no presence there aside from the empty parked username)

Embedded ‘Theads for you’ panel in my Instagram feed with content previews from Threads that I can’t dismiss

daveshea,

@csilverman @saila that’s helpful context, the focus on photography may not quite fit my uses where I’m blending photos with lifestyle. I don’t remember how far I got evaluating it before my trial ran out though, so I should poke my head back in and see if I can see a fit. Thanks!

daveshea,

@skyfaller oh that’s very cool, I had no idea there was a fedi equivalent of Insta

The best part about making gyoza at home is that you can just kinda keep wrapping and cooking and eating and repeating for as long as you want

Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. I mean, literally. A nicer guy than Gym Jordan would not have had this happen to him. https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/house-speaker-vote-10-20-23/index.html

@cabel had to stay there once. Nothing “probably” about it.

Sometimes I’d only learn that a thing existed by all the hand-wringing and dunks on the bird site.

So, well done all. Mastodon truly became a worthy successor today on that metric alone.

I’m sure it’s not just an Air Canada thing for onboard flight maps to call out the most obscure points possible instead of the ones people have actually heard of, but they sure do bring their A-game.

Spotted yesterday:
Mounds View, MN - pop. 12,000
Theif River Falls, MN - pop. 8750
Kapuskasing, ON - pop. 8300
Bangor, SK - pop. 50
Bowie Seamount - pop. fish

GPDR sounded like a good idea for privacy protection, but the implementations really do make the web terrible while in Europe. Hope you like a blocking cookie preference full screen takeover greeting you on every. single. site. you visit.

daveshea,

@mattwilcox @boldewyn you’re intellectually correct, yet very behaviourally incorrect.

daveshea,

@mattwilcox @boldewyn yes? I’ve been in UX for 25 years. I know you can get used to anything. Doesn’t make it good.

I don’t know the issues. I don’t know the regulation or the public sector response. I’m commenting as a bystander experiencing the effects only, and I’m surprised we’re this deep in a thread on it.
