As always, domestic abuse is the flagship infosec threat model, the one where the victim has the least resources, the least recourse, where they're closest to immediate physical harm.

That this industry has failed at and mostly abandoned the idea of even pretending to try dealing with a threat model that's difficult and unprofitable and mostly hurts women is not news, but this new Windows Recall feature is next-level professional negligence.

denschub,
@denschub@schub.social avatar

@mhoye I got called an "AI hater" for pointing out exactly that (and the potential abuse by law enforcement) in https://mastodon.schub.social/@denschub/112478869422925619 and ... in a chat-thingie.

I love working in tech. :this_is_fine:

(but, to be fair to them, "AI hater" is correct.)

There's of course no way a "tool" like this (and its resulting "hallucinations") would ever be abused by law enforcement, abusive relationships, ...

Tech bros really need to start using their brains.

@jrconlin No. Meshing on top of BLE is a bit of a pain, and I wanted to avoid doing more work than I need to.

Realistically, I might still use Thread, just not blog about it much, because eh, yeah. :)

denschub,
@denschub@schub.social avatar

@jrconlin I'd be more tempted to use LoRaWAN for example as opposed to BLE, but then again, I'm too lazy to run my own base stations and my own repeaters.

I have the habit of donating to the Internet Archive at least yearly. If you have money to spare, you should donate, too!

Why? You might know them for the Wayback Machine, which of course is awesome all by itself. But they do so much more, like archiving Books, Video Games, and even fun things like the keygenjukebox-dot-com dump that I've been listening to all day between meetings: https://archive.org/details/keygenjukebox

Running that stuff is expensive. Go ahead and send them some money.

    @jrconlin That's.. somewhat concerning :/

    I love checking my webserver logs to investigate a huge traffic spike on an asset proxy service I run - just to discover that the User-Agent is "Bytespider", a crawling bot operated by ByteDance, allegedly used to train their "AI"s.

    Gosh I hate "AI" companies. Fuck off.

    Good luck IP-blocking them, btw. Requests are made from 16707 different IPs. Some of which are from China Telecom's network, but an awful lot of them are just plain AWS IPs from all over the world.

    I might be sent to IT purgatory for this, but... I'm happy to confirm that @frameworkcomputer's Ethernet expansion slot works absolutely flawlessly on my M1 MacBook Pro.

    It's Firefox 123 release day! https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/123.0/releasenotes/

    And with it, your friendly Web Compatibility team is shipping a brand new reporter to all of our users and I'm super excited!

    Found a site that is broken in Firefox, but works fine in other browsers? Let us know via the hamburger menu -> "Report broken site". 🧡

    People finally need to understand that Generative AI isn't generating anything. It's also not "understanding" anything. It is remixing its training material, and that's all it does, and all it will ever do.

    https://fosstodon.org/@gabrielesvelto/111930375742973633

    denschub,
    @denschub@schub.social avatar

    @woolie @jrconlin No. I mean training material.

    Because GenAI would still remix its training material, even if you would somehow train it on "ethical" material. The source and nature of its training material does not matter in this argument.

    sigh

    So, if you're in and get a svg screen that looks like what's down there, (or if you see weird, glitchy looking underlines or other things on pages like Wunderground or Google Docs), it's resistFingerprinting.

    Go to about:config and add the domain to privacy.resistFingerprinting.exemptedDomains.

    denschub,
    @denschub@schub.social avatar

    @jrconlin We should rename that pref to privacy.maybeBeABitMorePrivateButBreakHalfOfTheWeb.

    denschub,
    @denschub@schub.social avatar

    @dazo @jrconlin While I'm inclined to agree with you in theory, the reality is that the real issue lies in the fact that end users treat about:config as something meant for them to touch, when it's absolutely not.

    For things we want to be toggled by users, we add them to the settings interface, where they have explanations.

    denschub,
    @denschub@schub.social avatar

    @dazo @jrconlin But that's exactly my point: the folks about:config is designed for don't need documentation, because they work on the code behind the pref. So all the documentation that's needed are the comments in https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/source/modules/libpref/init/StaticPrefList.yaml and the actual implementation of whatever is reading the pref.

    Happy Year Increment, internet folks.

    Just a quick heads-up: last night, I moved my @mozilla.social account into this self-hosted account. This means that you might see some non-work related rants on here as well, in addition to the occasional Web Compatibility rant.

    If you don't like that... why are you on social media?! 🤨

    Unfortunately, since Mastodon's "profile moves" are a bit clunky, I'll have a hard time seeing responses to the mildly popular post from yesterday - but oh well.
