Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

A comment on the "retaliatory attack" from Iran on Israel during the night to today (https://todon.eu/@b9AcE/112268490079216894).

The bombing of Iran's consulate in Damascus on April 1 killing 16 people was an obvious trap to through the Iran-theocracy's longstanding rhetoric force it to do "something" highly visible or lose the prestige amongst some people that it has been generating through its posturing, proxy low-intensity war and through its rhetoric regarding Palestine which it would lose unless it acted somehow in return for what was technically Israel bombing Iran (diplomatic mission grounds are legally actual territory of the State it represents) and therefore it would lose more of its grip to brutally oppress the people at home as well as to project imperialist power,
which was undoubtedly a situation Netanyahu and pals specifically intended to trigger by its bombing since Netanyahu desperately needs a long and escalated war as protection against the years long huge domestic protests and demands for Netanyahu's ouster and continued prosecution for corruption.

That several major world "leaders" refused to even condemn the bombing of a diplomatic mission by Israel made it clear relying on supposed intl law was not an option; Biden et al are thus co-responsible for this world-endangering escalation.

@b9AcE I wouldn't have expected you among all people to disapprove the killing a bunch of IRGC high ranking members. Netanyahu is a fool and a war criminal. But I thought that Iran protester would be relieved that some organizer of the repression don't get to grow old finally.
And, Israel has not started the consulate targeting war with Iran, far from it.

    @Neko0001 Bonjour Neko, tu as l'air en forme aujourd'hui ^^.
    Je dirais qu'on écrit la première et qu'on dit la seconde. À l'oral on mange des mots, des syllabes, des lettres, les espaces ( en tout cas dans les quartiers populaires parisiens c'est différent ailleurs. Dans le sud-est on prononce même les "e" à la fin des mots )

    As someone interested in the weird dance of international law, it's fascinating how it is accepted that you can ship a missile platform somewhere but it doesn't count as declaring war unless one of your guys, acting as a soldier in your military, fires the missiles.

    What do you think will happen if/when there are on-the-ground combat robots? Drones seem to have been accepted as not causing war, but somehow an armed robotic quadruped feels different?

    @ZachWeinersmith Russia have hundreds of thousands soldier waging war in Ukraine while being technically not at war with Ukraine. While being at war with Japan due to not having signed peace.

    Hey Francophones - possibly offensive question. Beyond ending sounds, are there other rules of thumb for guessing gender of a word without knowing it? I may be imagining it, but I feel I can get pretty far imagining a sexist past society, e.g. large scary animals, new technology, important things often male. House stuff, small cute things often female.

    @ZachWeinersmith I don't think so as the gender of word comes mostly from latin declination with a lot of randomness involved. There is some rare instances of words changing gender because of sexism in the XVIIth like error becoming female.

    I'm finding it a little hard to work today with this in my head.

    Antarctic ice extent is now 6.4 standard deviations below the mean. That is, I'm reliably told, a one in 13 billion year event.

    We're about to see a lot of shit hit a lot of fans. And we are far from ready.

    @dada Mélenchon fait assez régulièrement des sorties antisémites ce qui lui a valu les foudres des asso de luttes contre l'antisémitisme ( des antifa à des trucs plus institutionnels style le CRIF) du coup il attaque régulièrement les asso qui dénoncent son antisémitisme.
    L'article de libé donne le contexte du cas précis mais c'est un événement assez récurent malheureusement

    Wondering why so small? Poland seriously considers retrofitting its existing thermal power plants running on coal with small nuclear reactors, thus preserving all the existing generation, heating and distribution infrastructure, minus coal. 30 MW sounds like perfect replacement for the existing coal reactors.

    Additionally, a number of chemical plants consider obtaining power and heating (hot steam) from nuclear power, and this design seems to respond to this demand perfectly. It's also very safe.

    > The conceptual design of a new Polish high-temperature research reactor, developed by the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ), has been unveiled. Developed with input from Japan, the reactor could be built in Poland at the NCBJ.

    > The helium-cooled reactor - measuring 12.3 metres in height and with a diameter of 4.1 metres - will provide 30 MW of thermal power. It will feature a prismatic-type core consisting of hexagonal blocks. Moderated with graphite, the reactor will use TRISO-type fuel with 8-12% enrichment. The primary forced circulation helium cooling circuit will operate at a pressure of 6 MPa. The helium temperature at the reactor outlet will be 750°C, at the inlet 325°C. The reactor will feature passive and active safety systems, with a planned lifetime of 60 years.
