dingus,

It’s not totally off base though. Wait until you hear about reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress. Oxygen does cause damage to our bodies. Our bodies have protective measures against that and we need oxygen to live, but our utilization of it does cause damage.

dingus,

Weirdly I feel like I self-gaslight all the time to the point where I’m not sure if certain things are real.

Some examples…

Am I really having pain in my foot or am I being a hypochondriac? How can I tell if it’s real or if I’m making it up?

Was my boss actually in the wrong in saying that to me or am I just a crazy person?

Are my feelings genuine or am I subconsciously just acting a certain way for attention?

dingus,

Yeah I’m a tad confused at why it’s weird to measure by time. If I’m trying to get somewhere deep in the city vs on highway traffic the whole time vs something in between the two, the same distance will give you radically different times to traverse it.

It’s also useful to give other people time estimates. Isn’t it more useful to tell your boss that you’ll be 15 minutes late versus the distance away in miles or kilometers? How about when you’re a guest arriving at someone’s house? Isn’t it more logical to tell them you’re 30 minutes from arrival as opposed to giving them the exact distance away in km or mi, especially when they might not know whether you’re arriving from a high traffic area or not?

There is a lot you can criticize the US for and it would be totally valid. This one is bizarre and unwarranted.

dingus,

Ah sorry, man. I guess not a specific jab at you, but it’s weird because I’ve heard people make fun of this a lot and it’s just a bit odd to me.

dingus,

eBay actually has decent buyer protection policies. You need to sell it somewhere without that like Facebook marketplace

Hey i just wanna know are raccoons evil in some kind of way ?

A lot of things i thought were cute and nice like dolphines, ducks, cats (i saw one cat eat anothers new born), dogs (multiple cases of eating dead owners due to a variety of reasons starting from trying to wake em up to other malicious reasons), hamsters etc turned out to be wrong . Raccoons are the only thing i believe in...

dingus,

I am definitely not “normal”, but I do not think in autistic. I however have extreme social anxiety and I do think thoughts like the OP. So I think you can feel that way for more than one reason, be it autism or social anxiety or whatever

dingus,

Isn’t a salad wrap no longer a salad? If it’s encased in breading then it’s a wrap/sandwich, not a salad. It’s like calling a vegetarian burrito a salad.

dingus,

I haven’t seen a firefly since I was a small child. I’ve never really thought about them before, but it is kind of sad not seeing them. Generally I hate bugs, but fireflies are pretty.

dingus,

I have a friend with kids. I’m also an aunt. I think it’s absolutely fantastic when people can be parents, but I also don’t at all understand how anyone is capable of doing that shit. I’m more than capable of briefly watching and playing with kids for several hours at a time, but not caring for them 24/7 forever.

It’s especially wild to me when parents basically explain to me that they are constantly legitimately going through extreme suffering in what you describe in your first paragraph.

But then they tell me how literally suffering 24/7 is somehow all worth it to them and it makes even less sense. I’m guessing there’s some sort of hormonal thing going on to trick the brain into giving periodic happiness episodes in the middle of what sometimes seems to be flat out torture.

dingus,

They seriously have the best peanut butter to chocolate ratio. The regular Reese’s just have too much chocolate imo.

dingus,

I also work in healthcare and deal with lots of poop and blood and dogs licking my face doesn’t gross me out. Cats on the countertop do squick my out a bit though.

When I bought a newer phone a few years ago, I was really disappointed with how weak the vibrate was. It’s a flagship phone and I have the vibration intensity set to maximum, but I still often don’t realize that my phone is vibrating in my pocket… especially at work. Never had that happen in a phone before. Idk if newer phones just ship with weaker vibration motors nowadays or if it’s just this particular phone line.

That being said, I actually like my ringtone and notification sounds. I turn them on while at home but leave it on vibrate at work.

Whenever I try switching to Linux, there is always something that doesn’t work right and takes forever to finagle with to fix if it’s even possible. I’m primarily a Linux Mint fan (daily drove it on my aging desktop until it died of old age a few years back), but I’ve also dabbled in a few other noob-friendly distros like Ubuntu (was really into it when everything was still orange and brown lol) and Pop OS.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love using Linux to breathe new life into older systems, but it just isn’t a good option for me personally if my device hasn’t gotten sluggish yet.

As an example, I have an aging laptop that started blue screening a bunch. It doesn’t support the Win 11 upgrade due to it’s processor not meeting minimum specs. So I thought it was finally time to see if Linux would improve it.

First of all, I had a hell of a time installing various distros without having them boot to a black screen after installation completes. Took absolutely forever to finally sus this out on the various distros I tried. Then I find that the couple extra buttons on my basic Logitech mouse don’t work. These are essential buttons for me that I use constantly. I go through a million troubleshooting steps before finding out that it’s a Wayland issue, so I switch back to Xorg and everything is cool. But then I start running into lag issues which never occurred on my Windows install. I also tried playing some games I had in my Epic Games library. I could not for the life of me get it to work, no matter which platform I tried. I get that Steam has better Linux compatibility, but not all of us have all of our games on Steam.

Finally got tired of the whole ordeal and switched back to Windows. Did a bit more troubleshooting and seemed to have resolved the blue screen issues and now it seems to work perfectly and much better out of the box than Linux. It’s not an old enough device a Linux refresh to be worth it yet.

I get that Lemmings are die hard Linux fans, and I think Linux has some fantastic use cases…but for many users it actually isn’t a good alternative. I find it works best when you want to breathe new life into older hardware or if you have every component specifically built to work for a particular Linux distro. But when basic features don’t work properly without hours of troubleshooting (if you can ever get them to work at all), it’s a little hard to just recommend it to your average Joe whose Windows/Mac computer works just fine.

This “everything just works” Linux experience a lot of people talk about on Lemmy/Reddit has absolutely never been my experience, even though I’ve been a casual Linux fan for over a decade now. Meanwhile, I’ve had the opposite experience with Windows (unless you’re talking really old Windows versions like Win XP and older).

dingus,

Also in terms of games…I know Steam compatibility is supposed to be great, but if you use other platforms, you might run into some issues. Most of my library is in the Epic Games store (I know, terrible to admit this online…but they give you a lot of free shit), and I just could not get it to work at all the last time I tried Linux (maybe 6ish months ago).

dingus,

Yeah I thought of it as locking in my rent too! But then I found out that my housing payments have gone up each year like rent has. And it’s basically the same cost as renting. Oh well.

dingus,

I thought of this one day and it did seem a tad depressing, but on the other hand…

I did well in school, but I could never just mentally relax. After being at school all day, there was always something I was supposed to still be doing…homework, studying, etc. my time at home was never fully “me time,” as there was always more work I was supposed to be doing at home.

Now that I work full time, when I get home, there’s nothing I’m obligated to do. I physically cannot take work home from my job and I’m very happy that it works that way. I can completely and fully relax and forget about work at the end of the day. There’s no homework or studying that I’m supposed to be doing. Plus, I make money now as opposed to when I was in school and so I can buy whatever the fuck I want.

I realize that not everyone has a job like that. My brother has a WFH job and seems like he works 24/7. But I’m thankful that I have an entirely separate work life…I’m either on the clock physically at work or I’m not. And I have a much more satisfactory work life balance than I did when I was in school.

At least in the US, when you are attending a degree program, a lot of times you can pick between several different types of classes to fulfill a specific requirement. For example, maybe you have the option to either take plant biology or invertebrate biology and it will satisfy the same requirement. So you choose plant biology because it interests you more.

And then there are often multiple class times available for some of the larger classes. So you can slightly tailor your education to different interests and your own schedule.

Except when I went to grad school…all of my classes were preselected for me in the way that you stated they were for you.

dingus,

Generally, it’s easier for the internet to understand. But I cannot date because I’m incompatible with other people in a very specific, but essential way. I tend not to explain it to people irl because it’s too awkward and not really essential that people know, but I have tried before.

I’m sorry that this isn’t exactly helping the OP, but it does remind me…

How the hell do I keep my work shoes from smelling? I stand all day at work for 8 hours. I wear fresh socks each time I put on my shoes. I try spraying my shoes with lysol, putting baby powder in them, putting dryer sheets in them, throwing them in the washer, etc. But nothing helps totally alleviate it. After I kick them off at the end of the day, I can tell that they still smell and my feet will smell because of them until I shower again.

At least it doesn’t seem too bad like OP, but still. It’s frustrating to not be able to fix a smell.

I don’t have any sort of foot fungus and I wear breathable netted tennis shoes. I also wear different shoes when not at work. My non work shoes don’t stink (unless I go to like an amusement park or something and walk all day), but I also don’t wear any other shoes for such a long period of time at once.

Ideally, I need to have dedicated work shoes that aren’t swapped out for my other casual shoes. I work with biohazardous things and can end up with stuff like blood on my shoes.

dingus,

I honestly have no idea what material my socks are made of. I haven’t heard this one before. Thanks for the suggestion!

dingus,

What is it like owning a hamster? I’m a single person who loves alone and idk how I’d fair leaving something like a dog alone all day. Been curious about something simple like a hamster. Also, could they be left alone for a day or two like a cat if you have the right type of feeder/water setup?

dingus,

I have ad free YouTube on the YouTube app on Android. Just takes modding the app through a simple guide. Only works on Android though, not iOS IIRC. The tool is Revanced.

Also for Android Smart TVs, check out the TV app called SmartTube Next.
