The nice thing about programmability of shader languages is that it often lets you work around the bugs in the language implementauon.

SSD stands for "solid state drive".

That makes no sense. What is being driven?
I know it's from hard drive,. or floppy drive, where a disk was being spun.

Vulkan shader maximal reconvergence extension has been released.

This is a deeply technical issue. But your intuition about how subgroups work is wrong.
This cuts across APIs, but Vulkan is doing something about it.

Been watching Last of Us.

This might be hitting me in the least optimal way:
Currently reading The Stand.
Read and loved Station Eleven, and watched the HBO adaptation.
Never played Last of Us.

Will continue, but am disappointed so far.

TIL for a long time the US banned Mexican avocadoes. The ban was lifted in 1997.

That explains a few things.
Growing up, avocadoes were pretty rare. Now they're pretty common.

Also the boomers telling the millennials to stop eating avocado toast to save money to buy a house.

Anybody hear that before?

Needed to use "poetry" today. Appears to have locked up. I'll see tomorrow if it's finished.

Python package management is a muddled confusion, from my experience.

Heyo, here's a writing tip:

Use "i.e." when you want to say "that is to say", like a definition.
Even numbers are divisible by two, i.e. X is even if there is some integer K such that X = 2 * K.

Use "e.g." when you want to give an illustrative example.
Fruit are often colourful, e.g. bananas.

Current status: practicing a "fry the potatoes in bacon fat" dish for Christmas.
Pro tip: use that water+steam trick I shared last week for caramelized onions.

Declaring it a success.

REMEMBERING THE 1980s

Remember that time when a West German 18 year old guy flew a Cessna from the West and landed near Red Square in Moscow?

His name is Mathias Rust.

Kind of a miracle nothing tragic happened, like triggering a military showdown.
A real WTF moment, IMHO.

Time dilates, it just does.

When I first heard Sgt Pepper "It was 20 years ago today..." it had only been 9 years since the recording.
And now it's been another 48. What the

20 years doesn't seem that long anymore.

Also The Joshua Tree was only 20 years after Sgt Pepper, but 37 years ago.

Finished reading The Stand (uncut, complete). 1141 pages in paperback.

Good story. Stephen King is a humanist through and through. Some deep insights about human nature. Well done.
4/5
It's a long slog, not for everyone.
I think he pulled off the ending this time. :-)

I find it reductive and demeaning.

Prefer "staff", "staff level", or "staffing".
Treat people like full human beings.

NEWS FROM CANADA

The federal government announced their budget. It raises the inclusion rate on capital gains above a gain of 250K$, on businesses and trusts. (Ooh, multiple qualifiers there...) From 50% to 67%.

Cue the "brain drain" Cassandra's, just like the 1990s.

Inclusive language tips:
Instead of "Hey guys", say "Hey folks" or "Folks".
Instead of "manpower" say "staff".

Concision, precision, and inclusion.

Ok this is silly but the timing is ripe.
About 6 months ago I said I saw a bad take but didn't want to be mean.

It was a Sam Altman tweet where he posted a government debt to GDP ratio graph of for the US from 1980 to present. He complained there was no plan to fix it.

It's dumb. It's concern trolling. It's rooted in profound ignorance of economics.

It's a crime chart: why start in 1980? Why not include the Great Depression and WW II.

What matters is if r > g (thanks Piketty).
