Just witnessed a child in a supermarket reciting:

"I'm not a pheasant plucker, I’m a pheasant plucker’s son but I’ll be plucking pheasants When the pheasant plucker’s gone."

The mother looked around for a hole to jump into while trying to shush said child.

I was just full of admiration, not only did that tongue twister take me back to my childhood - but the kid had perfect diction and pulled it off!

At what age do you have an opinion on 'how many buckets is too many buckets'?

I have a site using the https://www.drupal.org/project/opigno_lms distribution.

Despite it being over six months past Drupal 9 EOL there is not a public D10 release. The company behind it says that there is a D10 version but it is only for their customers. The Drupal.org release will happen eventually. This feels wrong.

dreamleaf,
@dreamleaf@drupal.community avatar

@keiserjb

It looks like a well developed and supported distro. But my rule of thumb is to not use projects where there is a sales pitch on the project page that equals the space given to explaining the contributed project. This is always a red flag for me that at some point things will disappear behind a paywall.
...

dreamleaf,
@dreamleaf@drupal.community avatar

@keiserjb
I do see the point of supporting their paid customers as a priority though, it is their investment that enables it to be contributed back.

However, I'd much rather see a limited community version than have to wait an unknown amount of time to be able to upgrade.

If you're in the UK or interested in politics at all, you can't have missed the crazy announcement of a general election. Made notable by the great political trick of seeing the Prime Minister getting extremely soggy.

In order to celebrate, my second business created a playlist... enjoy...

Congratulations to the inaugural members of the new Project Update Working Group. The group tasked with helping maintainers prepare contributed projects for the next major release of Drupal core. https://www.drupal.org/about/core/blog/announcing-the-inaugural-project-update-working-group-members

Just sent off a quote/proposal for a huge website build. The chances of me as a freelancer getting the gig is small, but the potential payday is worthy of the punt.

I'm apparently up against a couple of large, respected UK Drupal agencies - but got asked to quote due to personal recommendations from other clients, so I'm counting that as a good thing even if I don't get it.

Freelancing is hard, especially landing large projects, so it's a bit of an ego boost to even get the chance to try.

Hey @e0ipso - are you involved in this:
https://www.drupal.org/about/core/blog/working-toward-an-experience-builder

It's great they've acknowledged your work on SDC and are looking at it as a model for the future. But I'm concerned that if people adopt SDC now it could be a massive task to then convert to the experience builder? Am I worrying for nothing?

The next time i get the bright idea to make my own little publishing system can someone please spank me hard and repeatably with a wet newspaper - why ooooh why do i do this to my self ?

its not writing the stuff at first its the goddamn updates and little things that just keeps sneaking around + my complete lack of good documentation

Im doing all the things im whining about systems doing ...

oh well it do says beta and "use with caution" ...

dreamleaf,
@dreamleaf@drupal.community avatar

@mortendk

Surely it's a feature not a problem? You created your own system to keep your skills sharp and the lack of documentation is a deliberate action to ensure you assess the code at every opportunity.

I am starting to suspect that is reducing my personal and professional tenacity. I'm now so used to turning to AI when I'm stumped that when I need to rely on my own brain to get past a roadblock, I can't quite remember how to harness my neurons and power through.

dreamleaf,
@dreamleaf@drupal.community avatar

@awsamuel

It's an interesting take, but since the invention of education, the challenge has never been "what is the answer" but "what is the question".

Whether using AI, a google search or even a real life library - the difficult challenge has always been "what do I need to know?". Whatever tool you use, if you ask the wrong question, the answer you receive will be wrong.

Taking a win before lunchtime today. Just got called "a real developer"!

Been building sites for decades, and love Drupal and all the hard work of module maintainers. But sometimes a module doesn't do exactly what you want/not as easy as you'd like.

I found this setting up the data_export module (which is great!) but it is pretty heavy when all I wanted was to be able to download table data as CSV on the fly.

As for being called "a real developer" - I'll take the win before he sees my code.

Bit of drama around @drupalassoc's new partner pricing tiers.

I'm personally not too bothered by the pricing structure.

(her comes the big but)

BUT:

"The Drupal Marketplace will be reserved solely for Makers. [...] The Marketplace will be branded as the global list of “Makers” [...] and will only list Drupal Certified Partners."

So... actual makers who don't also cough up $$$ are booted off the list; orgs who pay but don't necessarily contrib otherwise are now called "makers"?

dreamleaf,
@dreamleaf@drupal.community avatar

@jpoesen @drupalassoc or just work harder on the contribution credit system and reward the real contributors with honoured status.

The fact that there is a contribution credit system and this financial pay gate speaks about the motivation behind it.

dreamleaf,
@dreamleaf@drupal.community avatar

@larowlan @jpoesen @drupalassoc

It's still technically pay-to-play, as the financial contribution is a strict requirement - no pay... no play.

Let's not be fooled though, this isn't a "contribution", it's a "fee". So a company that contributes to making the software better using their own resources, then has to pay to have that acknowledged.

Every other contributor that doesn't have the ability to pay will not even get a marketplace mention despite the level of code contribution.

pcambra, (edited ) to drupal
@pcambra@drupal.community avatar

The new @drupalassoc certified partners is just delusional, and incredibly US centered, so now if you don't pay a fee you're not listed in the marketplace no matter how much you contribute?

In our case (10 people agency + contractors), a $5000 fee is just not worth it, we were happily paying the community supporter tier but we won't do a 5x increase, it's just not reasonable for our budget.

https://www.drupal.org/association/blog/turning-takers-into-makers-the-enhanced-drupal-certified-partner-program

dreamleaf,
@dreamleaf@drupal.community avatar

@pcambra
It's been proven time and again that any "trusted partners" value is best determined by contribution rather than financial contribution. The moment that a user realises it's literally a purchased recognition, it loses ALL value.

While I'm incredibly grateful to those kick ass companies that have made Drupal what it is today, their gain is working the big money contracts.

@pcambra
The majority of us however are trying to offer affordable solutions to smaller business that don't have huge budgets. In turn it means that we charge less.

The majority of my clients won't be able to afford the Acquia services etc, and this feels like a 100% Acquia type move.

If Drupal were not a champion of open source I wouldn't have a problem with a move like this, but you can't expound the value of community if the benefits are reserved only for those few leading companies.

Drupal: We value your contributions

Company: Thank you

Drupal: So because you contribute so much and devote paid dev hours you can now pay us lots of money to advertise you

Company: Hang on, you just said you value us and now you will only recognise that if we give you $$$

Drupal: It's not like that. It is because we value you that we are giving you the opportunity to give back

Company: Err, so how about if we stop contributing and also not paying

Drupal: BRB

@jurgenhaas @pcambra @drupalassoc

The Drupal ecosystem is not just made up of "companies", there are countless freelancers that all do their bit to promote and further Drupal. Not necessarily in code contributions, but they are all marketing and promoting Drupal to clients every day.

A freelancer will never be able to compete with a large corporation - and this move will remove them from any visibility whatsoever.

$1500 for a freelancer is a LOT. That does not equate to $1 per day.

dreamleaf,
@dreamleaf@drupal.community avatar

@jurgenhaas @pcambra @drupalassoc

Just looking at my own situation, I'm a freelancer who works with clients of all sizes. Ranging from local traders to the University of Cambridge.

Marketplace listings can be a measure of value. Simply by appearing in a listing adds value. If that value is reserved only for those that can afford it, then it is an advertising platform and not a marketplace.

There is room for both, but they need to be clearly labeled as such.
