So I picked up my blood pressure medication. There's no instructions on the best time to take it. I just want to make sure I take this correctly.

@Callalily @That_One_Guy I take the amlodipine as well. My doc said in the morning and with food.

It's been a long time since I have picked up a book that was not work related. I'm thinking it's time to start the first book of the year. Most years I would already have read probably 10 books so far. Any good recommendations that are recent releases?

My 2024 reading thread is below!

Book 1: On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden

5 stars

Stunning art, lovely found family, and a fun sci fi setting, all while managing to strike the perfect balance between cozy and yearning.

@franksting @hawksquill @bookstodon It's certainly timely. I agree that the prose is an acquired taste - "belabored" is a good descriptor; a little much? But yes, it gets at the very raw, basic things that a conflict like this would do to a family in a way I'd never read before.

Wow, I just finished Tenth of December, a short story collection by George Saunders, and it's a wild ride. These stories are amazing.

What are you reading?

@ferngirl @bookstodon The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store, by James MacBride. I previously read his Deacon King Kong and loved it - humor and the strength of community and redemption, along with great narrative voice to boot. This book has similar themes, but set in a very poor African-American and Jewish immigrant community during the Depression in a small Pennsylvania town. Highly recommend!

So here is a question to the @bookstodon community: what is the best book you have read this year?

educaremom,
@educaremom@a2mi.social avatar

@TarkabarkaHolgy @bookstodon "An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us" by Ed Yong. SO interesting and engaging! Yong's passionate interest and nerdy humor come through, and it was a truly fascinating read. I read this with several other women in our "Nerdy Girls Nonfiction-Only Book Club", and everyone in the club loved it.

Whenever we see people, no matter how evil, get made fun of for suffering a health condition...

...such as sudden episodic aphasia...

...some of us imagine our own loved ones who've suffered the same symptoms being mocked the same way.
