> A new national survey conducted by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center finds a broad majority of parents experience isolation, loneliness and burnout from the demands of parenthood, with many feeling a lack of support in fulfilling that role.

> The survey of parents conducted this month found:

> * About two-thirds (66%) felt the demands of parenthood sometimes or frequently feel isolating and lonely.

  • About 62% feel burned out by their responsibilities as a parent.
  • Nearly 2 in 5 (38%) feel they have no one to support them in their parenting role.
  • Nearly 4 in 5 (79%) would value a way to connect with other parents outside of work and home.

huh I have slept a reasonable number of hours, had no trouble getting off the bed, and finished watering my plants and making coffee well before work time. who am I and what have I done with the real me

I wonder what could have caused this improvement over the past few months, she says, sitting in the pleasant sunlight in a bright warm room listening to the happy birds singing in the fresh greenery

elilla,
@elilla@transmom.love avatar

@jens yes but on most nights the past week I have slept like 3h. it's not really a matter of age but chronic insomnia. I don't think I ever slept more than 7 hours or so. or it was so long ago I can't remember it.

elilla,
@elilla@transmom.love avatar

@jens what I mean is, it's not that this night I slept less than normal. it's that this night I slept much more than normal, which for me is a big win.

(and it also means I can do things in the morning, because I'm actually rested. since normally I only sleep a few hours, I wake up tired and can't get up. the timing of waking up doesn't change, only how functional I am. it is impossible for me to wake up later than 6~7ish, no matter if I slept at 4 or at 23.)

have you guys heard of rabbit r1, the new “teenage engineering” ai device of the “future”
people cracked it, turns out it’s just a cheap android 13 device running a system flutter app

The Rabbit app running on an Android phone

elilla,

@blobcat

CEO:

> rabbit r1 is not an Android app... rabbit OS and LAM run on the cloud with very bespoke AOSP and lower level firmware modifications, therefore a local bootleg APK without the proper OS and Cloud endpoints won’t be able to access our service.

"it is not an Android app because if you try to run the APK on any Android that's not our proprietary Android gizmo, we'll block you"

due to lack of philosophical education, STEM fans don't know that you can use science, hard data and logic to convince yourself of anything whatsoever.

I'm thinking of how they could have chosen to believe anything—UFOs, reincarnation, law of attraction, orgasm therapy—but instead the rationalists chose to believe in pulp sci-fi machine gods and racism

one of the reasons that made me give up living in Japan is how surprisingly difficult it is to get vegan food, especially in the Japan I like the most (mountain villages in Iwate, the Tsugaru strait, Akiyama-gõ etc.).

to make matters worse, all those kind and sweet old people are very proud of their food culture and want to offer you all sorts of locally produced cuisine, and even if you refuse the seafood everything that's savoury has bonito in it and everything that's sweet and modern (not wagashi) has milk in it, and there's no way to explain why you don't eat animals without breaking their hearts. despite the Buddhist vegetarian tradition, if you ever get intimate enough to explain "vegan for the animals", it comes off as foreing criticism of lifestyles.

there are of course Japanese vegans and the kind of stuff you can get in vegan haunts in a big city is mind-bogglingly awesome, Japanese cuisine is almost scary in how good it is. but it's different than going into a Lawson and there's a million snacks and none of them are plant-based, and it doesn't soften the difficulty socially integrating with the food culture.

then you add all the times I had to make up some excuse to refuse an invitation for onsen, despite invitations for onsen being a great way of bonding and despite my love for onsen, because I'm not fit for onsen on tattoo grounds alone, nevermind doing public nudity with a trans body... there's even a videogame about it, it's kind of a whole thing.

I still miss Japan a lot (。ノω\。)

if 16-year-old me knew that as an adult I'd be watching Evangelion with German subtitles and nitpicking on where they don't quite match the Japanese she'd be.... ähm very unsurprised I guess. about the only thing about current me that would be unsurprising

spraying the Tillandsia usneoides until the colour changes to green is satisfying in a "powerwash simulator" kind of way

Me spraying T. usneoides (an air plant that looks like a tangle of whiteish-green strands) until they gradually change to moist green, kinda like orchid roots.

got used to distinguishing the pigeons from the tits by the sound of their wings. compared to the rock pigeons from the city, the wood pigeons we get in the balcony are quite shy

elilla,
@elilla@transmom.love avatar

oh the tit was pecking at the feeder right in front of me in the balcony door! I think they're slowly getting used to us

heard something that sounded too fast to be pigeon wings and too big to be tits :blobcatsurprised:

lately GRRM has been grumbling about "free speech". I'm kinda dreading the day that he'll inevitably come out in favour of Musk or JKR or something. I'm treating it as a matter of when not if.

I mean he was always my most problematic fave and it will surprise literally nobody, but it will still hurt me in particular

elilla,
@elilla@transmom.love avatar

@slothrop he's generally progressive in a clueless liberal kind of way but the books have a lot of weak spots. like he's consciously trying to write stories sympathetic to the disabled and various marginalised categories, but at the same time all the non-Euro-coded cultures are paper-thin and made of cheap stereotypes. he clearly put a lot of effort in writing lots of female characters from their POV and in my estimation does a good job at it, but at the same time there's uh a whole lot of rape in it, like, a lot, and it's not really explored from the perspective of the abused but there just for grimdark setting. that kind of thing.

elilla,
@elilla@transmom.love avatar

@slothrop I haven't. I'll probably like it but I read a lot of fantasy including botloads of queer fantasy and I like all of them, but scratches a particular itch that I haven't had satisfied since Tolkien, which is basically a world feeling alive through depth of lore. as if you could peek at the corner of the page and see entire nations. like, other than the ~5000 pages of the main story so far (plus the novellas) there's a sizeable Silmarillion, plus an ongoing "history" book series as if written by in-world sages contradicting one another, several great conlangs ("extended universe" kind of deal but still top notch (this username is from one)), and so on. I have a giant atlas on my bookshelf and I can get lost in the maps for hours. the author has a knack for foreshadowing and grand conspiracies that seem obvious on reread, and that plus the deep lore all but overdrives the imagination; ASoIaF fandom is all theories and what-ifs. the main plot per se is almost of secondary interest for me.

I'm open to recommendations but so far I haven't found other authors that are even trying to do this kind of thing, other than of course going back to the OG and reading all issues of Parma Eldalamberon back to back. (At least Tolkien's variety of bigotry feels like "the past".) you see this kind of work more often in TTRPGs than novels (Empire of the Petal Throne comes to mind), but I don't want to just read lorebooks, I want that sweet spot where a (non-gaming) lorebook exists, plus a novel gets me invested in it.

elilla,
@elilla@transmom.love avatar

@slothrop or to make a simple litmus test: does it have a Silmarillion? recommend me fantasy series that have at least one Silmarillion :boosts_ok_gay:
