Lil tip for every musician with a home studio, or anyone who has some large headphones. Grab one of these self adhesive kitchen roll holders, put it under your desk, bam, you can fit about 3 pairs of headphones and some leads on them, and they are cheap as hell.

Also if you're on a budget and the price of synth stands makes you wince but you need more desk space, buy a cheap wooden shoe rack, ones you can put together yourself are even better and usually cheaper and you can angle the wood then!

@limneticvillains Great ideas! I picked up these cheap plastic brackets at the local hardware store which are also useful. I think the packet had four brackets for NZD8.00.

I've advanced to the test project phase of two different jobs, one of which I kinda want and one of which I kind of dread getting...

The advantage of the one I'm kind of dreading is that it's fully remote, tho. The other one is hybrid but looks to be like 75% in office. But with dogs! (But also people, which means masking full time at work.)

Anyway, I'm told there are a ton of candidates for both positions, so it's still just a small step forward. But a step nonetheless.

    Went for the Keychron K10 with brown keys. Feels funny, obviously very different to the old Mac keyboard.

    Let’s see how well it shitposts…

    @mxtthxw Looking forward to your thoughts after you've used it for a week or so.

    And don't forget Karibiner Elements if you want to do a comprehensive remapping of the keys.

    If you were only bringing one synth keyboard with you on stage to perform, what would you bring up there? I’m asking because I have a vision of me, my guitar, and a stage synth I could stand near and use on and off. It would have to also carry some nice analog piano sounds at times. Not sure if it’s possible to do unless it’s a midi controller with laptop. But it’d be so cool if it was a standalone analog unit. The simplicity appeals. :blobcatcoffee:

    elsemusic,
    @elsemusic@musician.social avatar

    @ambergrey There are suitable performance models from all major manufacturers, designed to cover pretty much all the bases you need for live work. You'll need to decide how much weighting you need on the keyboard, and whether you can get by with fewer than 88 keys, but there are plenty of options.

    elsemusic,
    @elsemusic@musician.social avatar

    @MatthewKay @ambergrey I find 61 keys limited too, particularly when playing a piano part. But there are some 76 key models that would be OK, I think.

    JBK / JBK & history lesson 1 / ???

    There have been four core writing cycles, each of which containing some number of originals as well as remixes and / or community reimaginings of those songs.

    Fidelity
    Blood and Blackouts
    Voidtouched
    Salvation

    There have also been two minor writing cycles that were not metal focused that were a bit more weird in nature.

    Hopes and Dreams
    Deathphoria

    In this thread I’ll talk about each of the cycles and the motivations for them.

    @ordosmarkzero @flockofnazguls Wait. There's a edge?

    elsemusic,
    @elsemusic@musician.social avatar

    @flockofnazguls @ordosmarkzero That's a key point.

    Meta and Alphabet constantly parrot the inability of smaller platforms to provide the level of moderation required to provide a safe online environment, while patently failing to provide any safety or objectivity on their own platforms.

    The reality is that fraud, misinformation and spam are most profitable when they target large monopolistic platforms. Targeting twenty platforms instead of two or three? Twenty times as much work.

    elsemusic,
    @elsemusic@musician.social avatar

    @big_louse @flockofnazguls @ordosmarkzero ... to the point that you'd have to know nothing about the platform to sign on in the hope of scamming other users.

    I've added some notes on how to collect together the hardware required for a prototype PicoDexed, including how to use a cheap PCM5102 DAC with it.

    I've also now uploaded a prototype UF2 file that can be used directly.

    If you have a Pico and a DAC - feel free to give it a go! :)

    Had two really productive days working on my own bits. 7 tracks coming in around 22 mins.

    I’m quite tempted to mix them as 1 song with parts. It seems appropriate.

    Really hate tech sometimes. Was listening to a tune I've been working on for the past couple of weeks yesterday & suddenly the speakers cut out. After doing a number tests rearranging cables I've determined that outputs 1 & 2 on the Apogee Symphony are no longer functional. Have to take it in now for a warranty repair, which is likely to take weeks. Really frustrated, & thinking that after all the issues I've had the past year I've chosen the wrong hobby.

    elsemusic,
    @elsemusic@musician.social avatar

    @GuitarSith I hate that. Our previous audio interface's power supply died, and in its death throes burned out part of the interface's innards. Fixed under warranty with a month's outage, but then the interface died again two years later. It's good to have a backup, I guess.

    elsemusic,
    @elsemusic@musician.social avatar

    @GuitarSith At the moment my backup for the Clarett+ 8Pre is a very small, very old Behringer box that only offers 44.1 and 48 kHz sampling. I really should have something better on standby.

    elsemusic,
    @elsemusic@musician.social avatar

    @GuitarSith That's a thought.

    I'm looking at small mixers with built-in interfaces, but it's hard to find models that support 24/96, have quiet mic pres, and aren't twice the price of the current interface.

    My reason for this approach is that I can use that mixer in other contexts. There is one Allen and Heath that seems to fit the bill. Next time I'm in Wellington I'll inspect it in person.

    elsemusic,
    @elsemusic@musician.social avatar

    @muz4now @GuitarSith I'm often faced with self-inflicted problems. I was uninstalling our Faderport 16 a fortnight ago and noticed that our Integra 7 was powered via an earth-lifter adaptor.

    "Why would that be there?" I grumbled as I removed it. Two days later I recorded some piano (88 key -> MIDI -> Integra 7).

    "Where's that hum coming from?" I complained. "That wasn't there a week ago!"

    Eventually the pieces of the mental jigsaw clicked.
