I got rid of the old uncomfortable sofa almost two weeks ago and I've been trying to find a new one since that is not massive and ugly. Oh boy, I didn't expect it to be that complicated...(no, it's not me! :blobcatderpy: )

Now off heading to the furniture store on Saturday...wish me luck.

My first four-day #hiking trip went really well. I did the 100 km long "Witches' Trail" in the Harz mountains in four stages sleeping in not very well-maintained shelters.
I think with the route knowledge I have now the trail is also doable in three days.

Still got some cleanup to do so I will probably post some pictures and gear related stuff during the next days...

That's why I came up with the idea of mounting one solar panel to the inside. Its contribution to the overall outcome is slight but how do they say: many watts make a kilowatt or something like that...

TIL that #GNOME got rid of the "Activities" button in the top left corner but I hadn't noticed yet because I used the "Hide Activities Button" extension.
Good job, I found this quite ugly.

And here's the view from outside.

Two reasons for buying these panels were the discreet looks and almost optimal panel size for my

Next stop on my vacation: Volcanic Eifel in the far West of Germany. Never been here either so why not going for a hike?

I found a campsite in a book I borrowed with my online only library card (10 eurobucks a year...) and took the opportunity to unpack and dry all my camping gear from the bike tour and made coffee for the first time in days and listen to YouTube/podcast stuff.

I'll try to walk the highly recommended round course tomorrow.

My

Tent:

As a solo traveler I have just any option which doesn't really help.

Here is why I opted for a bivy tent (Geartop Bivy 2):

  • package size and weight (just 1.3 kg)
  • reasonable price
  • being able to set up in a Danish shelter
  • accepted on campsites (so no bivy sack)

It turned out to be:

  • robust
  • easy/fast to set up
  • rainproof

Downsides:

  • no sitting in closed tent
  • no porch
  • one layer -> condensation
  • cheesy camo optics
  • very little storage room

the tent in its packaged state, a lengthy textile tube; a pair of EU size 41 blueish hiking shoes next to it for scale
the tent set up in a small Danish shelter for some extra protection from low temperatures and annoying insects; there is also a bike in the picture and lots of stuff like bags and cooking equipment and a water bottle lying around; it looks like this person does some intense chaotic camping there...(smiley face)

My

Electronics:

  • phone: mostly running in battery saving mode, Wifi disabled

  • Garmin Edge 130, small low budget GPS navigation device

  • 10.000/20.000 mAh capacity powerbanks

  • chargers and cables

Lasts several days. Working Garmin/phone are crucial so there is a bit of redundancy.

Tip (especially for small campsites): if not explicitly prohibited check bathrooms/kitchen for outlets, be unconspicuous, sometimes even bluntly asking politely can get you permission.

My

Sleeping:

  • I prefer self-inflating sleeping mats. IMHO they are more robust and not so squeaky like thin air mattresses.

  • Tip: if you tend to move a lot in your sleep, go for the larger option if available. I went for the 195x60 cm mat. No regrets.

  • The sleeping bag was a risky purchase as I wanted to test if the light summer option was enough for my needs. Turned out to get chilly at times so I bought an additional inlet.

  • Inflatable pillow for sweet dreams.

@encarsia@social.tchncs.de avatar

My

Eating and drinking:

  • I have two drinking bottles stored in the standard bottle holders mounted to the frame

  • cutlery: spork and small standard Morakniv

  • cooking: 100 g gas cartridge, foldable stove is directly screwed on

  • cup, stove and lighter are stored in the pot, there is even space for instant coffee portions 😏

I prefer just heating water for hot beverages or instant dishes so I don't have the hassle of cleaning the pot.

some items from the other picture are stored in the pot so there are only the things left that have to be stored in a bike pannier/bag: aluminum pot, gas cartridge, spork, knife in a sheath

I just came back from my trip and some IRL people expressed their appreciation for doing so, some even stating that they wouldn't have the heart to do that.

It's not that difficult.

I don't use very expensive or ultra-light or minimalistic gear, still people recognize my luggage of being somewhat small.

So before putting the stuff away back in the closets I will show some of my gear.

Maybe it is helpful for others here to see what bike tourists may carry around in their bags.

encarsia, to Denmark
@encarsia@social.tchncs.de avatar

On my way across after 4 nights in shelters I set up my tent on a campsite. Danish shelters are awesome but so are hot showers.

Shortly after it began raining cats and dogs so I spent my time in the kitchen waiting for the rain to be over. The tent has remained dry inside; let's hope it won't get too chilly tonight.

Now I've got only 40 something kilometers to ride and I'm uncertain about staying another night or hop on an afternoon ferry back to Germany.

encarsia, to norge
@encarsia@social.tchncs.de avatar

Just starting from the campsite about 110 km away from Kristiansand.
I made 80 km yesterday while losing over an hour waiting for the ferry to Stabbestad, and then later because being routed to a ferry that doesn't operate (my fault, I should have checked in advance) so I had to take a detour and the elevation does the rest to a flatlander like me...🥴

Has anyone here ever made MOLLE panels out of ABS boards? Are 3 mm sheets and a Dremel sufficient for the task?
