Hello from :trainsgender: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C87954/2024-05-04/detailed, which is taking a rather fun double diverted route today :o

the WCML (red) is shut for engineering works, so instead we get to take the squiggly yellow route, turning right at Colwich to go via Stoke and Alsager, coming back to Crewe, and then going all the way round via Manchester (nonstop!) and Bolton until Preston

today I learned: nixpkgs clears the default search path for for some reason (I guess to improve sandboxing), meaning that the linker won’t look in e.g. /usr/lib if it can’t find something any other way (it’ll just fail).

this breaks doing things like running games on non-NixOS systems, since you need to get libGL.so.1 from somewhere (and you can’t even set LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib, since then everything in there will take precedence over the rpath in the binary and screw things up even more).

I do love it when you're on GWR and the train's wheels sound like they're about to detach and fly off (802 107, which is making a side-to-side "bonk-bonk-bonk-bonk" rattle; please enjoy the below audio)

Repetitive loud thudding and bonking sounds generated by a not very healthy sounding train (with an image of a distorted class 800 IET)

How iMessage detects Mastodon”, by @jkap, notes that you need a <link href=“…” rel=“alternate” type=“application/activity+json”> for iMessage to display the Good Link Preview for your page. GoToSocial has one of these, but alas, iMessage does not do the thing!

it turns out that you also need:

  • <meta property=“twitter:card” content=“summary”> (missing from GtS)
  • <meta content=“article” property=“og:type”>
  • <meta content=“[ whatever text you want to show here ]” property=“og:description”> (this one is a bit obvious but worth including for completeness)

one quick patch later and it works (mostly)!

a fun thing on tonight's delayed and weird train journey: saw my first ever splitting distant signal, SN212, displaying both green and yellow simultaneously!

this is an old deprecated way to signify a change of route (here, main to relief line) which I'd read about, but hadn't seen in person; Dave McCormick was keeping tabs on my route and pointed it out, and I got my camera in time for a crappy photo

An excerpt from the linked article on splitting distants, showing the same yellow-and-green pattern.
An annotated OpenTrainTimes map showing the route taken by my train crossing over from the Up Main to the Up Relief. The location of signal 212, west of Ealing Broadway, is also shown.

it looks like by the end of 2024, travellers from outside of the UK will need to bring me with them in order to get entry into the country

I'm looking for a new job! :kittywave:

👷‍♀️ I can build software for your business (mainly in Rust, but I pick up new things quickly), or help you make sense of your existing software. I’m familiar with networking (I run AS213185 to experiment with BGP, OSPF and such), railway open data, and a bit of embedded stuff too (schematic/PCB design in KiCad, embedded Rust).

✨ Recently, I've tracked London Underground trains (and given a talk about it), reverse-engineered UK rail tickets, and built some hardware to make LED panels work. I have a website at eta.st with more stuff, too!

🌐 I'm looking for hybrid jobs (not fully remote) in the UK, but I could be tempted away to the Netherlands or Germany for the right role. I'm also open to contracting and part-time projects!

✉️ Send me an email at job@eta.st if you're interested (or want my CV)

Boosts appreciated! ❤️

so far: extremely chaotic (and also extremely poorly ventilated, masks recommended) — but somehow still fun?

if you want to say hi, hit me up! I'm just wandering around :)

I had some more custom PCBs made for the LED panel, and they actually work!

this is really cool; I've ordered PCBs before, but this is my first time doing surface mount, and my first time using the RP2040 microcontroller on its own :o

The PCB is plugged in to both a computer (via USB, offscreen) and the panel (via IDC ribbon cable), and is successfully rendering a frame of Bad Apple!!

Many cats get the zoomies immediately after using the litter box. Sometimes it's to celebrate a successful trip to the bathroom, and sometimes it's to escape the nasty smell.

"celebrate a successful trip to the bathroom" ...do the cats have IBS

(this is from an article on cat zoomies)

This is such a not-uncommon occurrence in the gaming industry that, honestly, anytime I can’t find someone and there’s no obituary, I assume they’ve simply transitioned.

what an incredible line (via https://shrike.club/@projesterone/111445312804653987)

I can’t believe they’d actually write this in the berths; that’s amazing
