I’m calling it now: the slop feedback loop is going to ruin the Internet.

Look at the second toot in this thread: Google’s AI Assistant got the gasoline recipe from AI generated content.

We’re playing the shittiest game of telephone ever.

I know people like to think iPadOS 'forked' from iOS when it was renamed a few years back, but it really didn’t. If you install Xcode, both iPhone and iPad simulators run out of the exact same OS root. It's the same set of apps, the same SpringBoard — it just decides which features you get at runtime based on screen size and a feature map. That's not a fork; the name essentially means nothing. A brand new $4,000 iPad runs the same OS as your six year old phone

Kinda makes me think the whole "Ask to not track me" is more of a way to try to kneecap their ad competition instead of legitimate privacy concerns.

The EU/DMA version of AltStore looks hawt. Spent the day with @rileytestut and @shanegillio, and it’s wild just how much they have ready to go (pending Apple final approval), before any of the other alternative marketplaces, and with exciting new monetization models too ✌️ I don’t think Apple is at all prepared for the kind of positive disruption new App Stores will bring

wait a fucking second: This smartphone has a FLIR camera built in, and also the GPS has broken so that it doesn't work while you're in motion. This isn't a hardware failure, this is a software bug they delivered in an update.

I thought this was just incompetence but I just had the horrific thought that this might have been on purpose, and related to the fact it has FLIR

favretto,
@favretto@mastodon.social avatar

@foone I think it's just crappy programming and QA.

Bullitt (aka CAT) has one or two FLIR phones and I don't think they have disabled GPSs

(Also, is an actual FLIR sensor or some Chinese IR sensor that probably isn't covered by US ITAR restrictions?)

favretto,
@favretto@mastodon.social avatar

@foone 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

I still think it's crap software (or worse, crap GPS hardware. Would not be the first time).

With like 5 different GNSS constellations available, some of which aren't the US GPS, bloody hell this should work.

favretto,
@favretto@mastodon.social avatar

@foone I'm betting on incompetence.
Either that or you dropped the phone and broke the GPS antenna.

This doesn’t sound good; making ActivityPub integration opt-in (or opt-out wholesale) just means nobody is going to opt in, and there will be no easy way to ask or convince accounts to do so. You will lose a lot of the value of interop immediately, and if somebody has a bad interaction with a Mastodon user they might cut off access entirely with a toggle switch. Block people, block instances, but no master switch or all this is for nothing @mosseri

favretto,
@favretto@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @mosseri I think it's both a way to try and keep people on Threads and a CYA to avoid scraping/data "leaks" via ActivityPub (and to avoid lawsuits).

The iPhone X, which isn’t getting iOS 17, is still a buttery 60fps experience at the system level as it leaves compatibility. That’s not bad going for a six year old phone! And much better than the early years of iPhone where even keyboard typing would slow down over its lifespan

The latest version of Google Play Services (v23.35.14) suggests you'll be able to locate some devices on the Find My Device network even when they're powered off or out of battery.

"Find My Device can also use the network to help locate this device when it’s powered off or out of battery."

This lines up with what Kamila Wojciechowska reported back in April. She said that Google was working on adding support for locating Pixel devices even when they're powered off.

If you have a U.S. or Canadian Samsung phone and want to set a preferred SIM card for calls, texts, and mobile data, Reddit user /u/FragmentedChicken has shared a quick tutorial on how to do so!

(This limitation isn't present in all regions, just NA.)
