flames5123,

STAR voting is so much better than RCV. RCV is only marginally better than first past the post.

flames5123,

You can rank every candidate, so you can give multiple people 5’s. If you can’t decide between them. In RCV, if 51% vote #1 for candidate A, 49% vote #1 for candidate B, but 100% vote #2 for candidate C, the winner is still candidate A even though everyone voted for C. Everyone would’ve been a little satisfied. In STAR, if everyone put 4’s for C, they would win.

flames5123,

You total all of the points. So say 100 people with the 51/49 doing A/B at 5, and all 100 do C at 4. A would have 255 points, B would have 245 points, and C would have 400. C wins by a landslide.

flames5123,

It’s more of an example how a more popular candidate can lose because RCV still depends on first past the post and isn’t that much better. It’s not translated by points. Everyone gets #1 first. If anyone has 51%, they win and we’re done. If no one has 51%, then we eliminate the least popular candidate, transferring the votes. This continues until one is at 51%. RCV is a bandaid.

flames5123,

Exactly. There are people who save so much to retire early, but I’m in my late 20’s and just living life instead of waiting. Sure, I’m putting away some money into my Roth and 401k to retire on time and live a comfy life after that, but I’m definitely traveling, going to events, spending more to live in a city, etc.

flames5123,

Yea, last time I tired, you have to connect to its personal wifi hotspot and download them via the app. It’s so backwards!

flames5123,

I don’t think either should be banned. We just need data protection laws. The government going after single companies sets a dangerous precedent.

What the EU did with some of their compliance laws that targeted Google and Apple was set a number of users, so it wasn’t necessarily targeting a single or set company, as it applied to future companies too.

flames5123,

In order to turn off the Find My iPhone functionality, you need the Apple ID password, so this isn’t even a real concern. You can even remotely lock the phone with a new password. Apple has made stealing an iPhone and making it work afterwards very hard.

flames5123,

Both of those require their own password or biometrics, so you couldn’t access those either.

flames5123,

When changing biometric data on the iPhone, it locks you out of using it in other apps, making you put in your bank/other specific password.

flames5123,

We’re on theonion. Of course it’s satire.

flames5123,

Super based. He likes girls, and he wastes no time.

flames5123,

Yeah I have an even smaller USB-C one. It sticks out less than 0.5cm from the port.

flames5123,

When they introduced the app back in December 2016, they gave you a free burger/fish filet. Me and my college roommate took advantage of this and made accounts with sharklasers.com emails. We got 3 free burgers a day just by driving to the closest McDonald’s, down the road 10 mins to the next one, then back.

flames5123,

It’s quicker to load a known json into a know UI than an entire webpage. Plus, you don’t get any features in the webpage like swiping, double tapping, or notifications (for things like DMs).

I use a Lemmy app because it’s faster and just works. It hasn’t asked for any extra permissions.

Amazon Ditches 'Just Walk Out' Checkouts at Its Grocery Stores (gizmodo.com)

Amazon is phasing out its checkout-less grocery stores with “Just Walk Out” technology, first reported by The Information Tuesday. The company’s senior vice president of grocery stores says they’re moving away from Just Walk Out, which relied on cameras and sensors to track what people were leaving the store with.

flames5123,

Damn… I go to a corner store Amazon Go almost every time I go into the office for a flavored seltzer. They have dog treats and my my dog loves going there every time.

I hope this is one of the convenience stores that it keeps open.

It was weird that last year they reversed the way you pay, making you pay/scan your code on the way out. So backwards to the “just walk out” motto. They went back on it less than 6 months later.

flames5123,

Huh? There so so many protections with cards. All of my cards can very easily do a charge back and they’ll fight the charge with the retailer, not you. You only use a PIN for debit cards using a debit transaction because it’s a direct transfer, resulting in no card fees, very much the same as cash. No real credit cards have a PIN.

Edit: ah, I see they weren’t talking about American credit cards. My mistake! Interesting to learn that other countries do though.

flames5123,

Sounds like they need a new credit card company. Mine wouldn’t even hesitate to cancel the transaction because it’s so obvious at that point.

flames5123,

I don’t think it’s for clout. I think it’s to show other people how nice life can be. Sometimes we need a reminder to appreciate the people we love.

Kansas Is About to Pass the Most Extreme Age Verification Law Yet (www.404media.co)

An age verification bill in Kansas that is the most extreme in the country has passed both House and Senate and is on its way to the governor’s desk. The bill will make sites with more than 25 percent adult content liable to heavy fines if they don’t verify that visitors are over the age of 18. It also calls being gay...

flames5123,

How will verification be done? Are they making the websites foot the bill for verification, which pornhub is super against, or are they going to make a centralized device verification, like how Louisiana did, allowing its residents to access pornhub again?

How is the 25% decided? Public content or private, like a Dropbox system? 25% by file size, length (how are pictures counted here), or just per item (would a gallery or picture be the item here)?

These legislatures know NOTHING about technology and how it all works and are just doing this for censorship and LGBTQ+ discrimination.

flames5123,

If it’s made in flutter, doesn’t that mean you easily publish it to the iOS App Store? Isn’t the main point of flutter to publish to both iOS and Android?

flames5123,

And RCV (ranked choice voting) isn’t really that much better. It has potential to be better if everyone voted honestly, but voting is a game.

STAR (score then automatic runoff) is the best we can feasibly achieve. It’s easy to teach and our current voting systems can account for this with little to no update (unlike RCV). Please look into star and push for this locally, then we can get this on a state by state basis.

flames5123,

Yea I was about to say. I play games that stay around 120 on my hardware and dip to maybe 80 sometimes. It’s not that noticeable, especially during action and if the dips aren’t super sudden drops. But 45-60 is noticeable.

flames5123,

The fun thing about FFXIV is that it’s free to play up to level 70. You’re only gonna be missing the last 2 expansions and then the one this summer. So you get 1/2 at no actual cost to you.

You only put in as much time as you want to get out too. There’s no real downside to taking longer beside things not being “relevant” anymore.

flames5123,

Combat doesn’t really get good until level 80. It’s such a slow burn. But the reason you need to do the 24 man raids is because it’s super important for the later story. It’s the only time they make you do an alliance raid. They don’t make you do any thing except dungeons and trials afterwards, which 99% can be done with their AI.

Luckily, the raids have a lot of people all the time and they’re so easy with maxed out level 50 stats.
