if you think that ChatGPT is not okay for ecological reasons - due to high power consumption - please consider that JavaScript on billions of devices is wasting much more energy to monitor your behavior and "offer a better experience".

I love my bf. I made something new for dinner and we eat. it does not taste good at all. bf eats a second serving, eating the remainder of the food, then turns to me and goes: "this was not very good" and when I confirm he asks whether there's any left.

Just to put into context how utterly insane the crypto landscape is, imagine going back to 2005 and saying this out loud to anyone. They would lock you up far away from society, and keep you sedated.

    my fave socials interact is when Person A says something that could be read several ways

    are they asking for help? looking for sympathy? starting a convo? they just bitching?

    so Person B guesses wrong and does something gauche and stupid like offer a link to the actual information A complained they can't find, allowing A to smugly, self-righteously lay into B for being a "reply guy" and "in their mentions"

    agree, most people welcome positive interactions, and I think most people reply with the kind of reply they'd like to recieve based on how they interpreted the intent of the post

    but there's also the problem of how an individual defines 'positive interaction' and for a non-zero number of people, that means replies that aren't just polite or well intentioned, but also comply with a set of specific, unstated parameters

    which is some prime grade mind gamey bullshit

    agree, though I think ppl also make a lot of assumptions about other people based on pretty unreliable data like an avatar or a username

    ex: all the anime girl avatars aren't backed by women, even if people might subconsciously respond as if to women

    and I suspect some ppl imagine responses (eg answering a question when they wanted to complain) assuming the other person is responding based on info they know about themself, not what the other person actually believes them to be

    🧵 Few accounts are signing up to Mastodon, despite the constant stream of apocalyptic announcements coming from Twitter.

    I think this indicates that we're in a period of consolidating what we've built so far, rather than seeing lots of new people arrive.

    Season One of Mastodon is over. The cast is established and most of the major plot lines are here. So where do we go?

    basically the same as old internet, people hanging around and talking about stuff that interests them, building weird little niche communities around stuff like knitting hats for reptiles or running Doom on plants

    I don't think it's good for a lot of the things people want it to be good for: advertising, clout chasing, news, organizing, promoting an agenda

    specifically with news and organizing, server connections are haphazard, sometimes conversations don't load right, and so on

    I think they're fine, it's just a thing to be aware of, they're just part of being in a federated system with a bunch of individually owned and administered servers running mostly compatible software and interoperating

    if you need news, use a legit news source

    if you need to organize in real time, use a system where everyone sees all the communication now, not some minutes later, or people don't see some msgs bc this server doesn't federate with that server/no one follows that account

    The determination & insistence on reverse parking into every mall parking lot & you are stuck waiting for them - together with 10+ cars behind you - as they take their own sweet time to get it just right

    hehe with backup cameras, I prefer parking in reverse because I can see the lines and that the car is straight, pulling in forward, 9 times out of ten it's open door, check lines, is car straight? no to at least one, try again, rinse, repeat

    Ah, I think it's okay, the "please think of the users" seems like it's most often deployed as emotional blackmail

    it's easy for users to just make an account on another server that can reach different parts of the network and either migrate or account switch to talk to different groups of people

    lead devs acting like this is why most of the Mastodon alternatives aren't viable though, no one wants to deal with projects mired in their own drama

    I think there will always be drama, there's been plenty in and around the Mastodon project too, though it seems to get by largely intact because Gargon has refused to get pulled into the weeds

    He's got some flaws as a manager (like a marked inability to delegate) but he does stay focused on the project rather than fighting with people publicly about drama

    hopefully recent changes in the project will improve the delegation and communication issues too
