freamon,

He mentions in the video description that the other guy is his friend, so I guess it’s just 2 people messing around.

freamon,

You seem to like David Fincher a lot. It’s a shame that ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ is 2011, I suppose.

This kind of thing is something that algorithms are better at than people - the resources are there, so you may as well use them.

Anyway, a well-regarded but often forgotten (by me at least) recommendation: Dead Man’s Shoes (2004). (don’t Google it beforehand though). Trailer: m.youtube.com/watch?v=hChf0hmh0fM

freamon,

I’ve seen this happen occasionally, but it doesn’t always look great, and relies on them having heard of Lemmy in the first place, obvs.

freamon,

Lol, no. I’ve decided that they should be exclusively referred to as Tails OS (they’ve yet to formally agree).

The name comes it being a Community that follows People (so flipping the usual relationship in a heads/tails kinda way, but also tail as a synonym for follow).

freamon,

Hmm, you’ve just bridged some content from BlueSky to the Fediverse … Haven’t you heard? We’re supposed to be burning those bridges.

freamon,

That we know of …

freamon,

… which many countries don’t have, because ‘First Past the Post’ systems naturally lead to only 2 viable choices.

They’ll also be an election coming up soon in the UK - I can choose between ‘Sensible Conservative’ or the currently ruling ‘Lunatic Conservative’, but anything else would be a wasted vote.

freamon,

Star Wars is often “Schrödinger’s Political Allegory” - the Empire is British/Roman/German but also American (if Endor = Vietnam, and Jedha = the Middle East), but the Rebels are somehow American too. Whatever side you’re on, you can use Star Wars to cast yourself as the good guy, and the other side as the baddies.

freamon,

I realise that Lucas has said that the ewoks in Return of the Jedi were representations of the North Vietnamese. If you look at Rogue One, though, Saw’s men are called terrorists, they use IEDs, it’s a desert environment … so the Rebels are, um, ISIS? Who do we want to win again?

Star Wars has always been too flakey to say Rebels are definitely this, or the the Empire are definitely that. It’s popularity, and it’s use by people on any part of the political spectrum as a a recruitment tool, depends on the fact that the US is magically both.

freamon,

freamon,

Another alternative would be to use .uk (there’s already a lemmyf.uk)

freamon,

It’ll be said for Taylor Swift’s boyfriend if she doesn’t make it. He probably won’t be able to do whatever it is he’d normally do at a Taylor Swift Superbowl.

Man the circle jerks around people like elon and andrew tate is disgusting on youtube .

I accidentally watched some youtube shorts and algorithm pushed a ahort about elon and then some shorts about tate . The comment section was acting like they were gods among men and everyone was wanting to be like them or praising them or wanting to follow them .etc . Do they only know who these people are from shit like shorts...

freamon,

You seem to have stumbled into the Man-O-Sphere. They win when young men watch them, they win when others bring them up to discuss how terrible they are. I shouldn’t even know who ‘Tate’ is.

Good luck unfucking your algorithm.

freamon,

Wait, what? Bullock’s character is actually dead in Gravity? I’ve been watching that movie way too literally. Kinda messes with her character’s arc though, if she karks it halfway through.

freamon,

Part of the problem is how much wider on average cars have got, making it less viable to park next to the curb or with just 2 wheels on it. Another part is that both members of a couple are more likely to be working and needing separate cars, and if their kids can’t afford to move away, than that’s an extra car too. Additionally, councils have convinced themselves that not lowering carbs to allow for extra driveways is promoting public transport use, ignoring how unviable that often is.

Cars with all 4 wheels on the pavement annoy me, but it’s become so normalised that drivers have looked at me, like me walking on the pavement is an irritating obstruction to where they have every right to be. I think the police in some areas allow you to upload a photo to report them, but it’s not something I’d do 'cos it’s a complex problem and fines aren’t the solution.

freamon,

Coffee filtered through a dead cockroach is about to become the new ‘Kopi luwak’ (coffee from animal poop).

It’s too disgusting now, but soon it’ll be both too disgusting and too expensive.

freamon,

No, I’m not sure, tbh. It’s a concept I’m struggling with, and I reliant on others to correct/question me. I was trying to answer the question of whether things get passed by value or not, and I wanted to say yeah, loads of things do (anything who’s size is known at compile-time) and to caution against thinking too much in C terms.

Here’s where my thinking is now: a variable without a & in front is passed by value. A primitive type (i.e. something who’s size is known) will be copied. So if a=4 and you pass it to a function, you can still refer to a later. A variable-length type (e.g. a String) can’t be copied, so it is moved, and referring to it later will be an error.

A variable with a & in front is indeed a reference. It’s a memory address, so it’s of fixed size. For either a primitive or a variable-length type, the address can be copied when passed to a function, so it can be referred to again later without issue.

This feels more correct to me, so hopefully it is. If not, I’m sure someone will have a better answer soon (this community is growing well!).
