When I discuss what should be in the web & what I consider to be bloat, it becomes clear that different people want different things from the web!

What I want are inter-connected documents, which can be rendered (given appropriate software) beautifully to any device!

I want it to be feasible for a small team to build their own!

And I don't mind extra features being added to the web as long as it has graceful degradation. So smaller browsers don't have to implement it!

@alcinnz I have found it to be both disappointing that I can't know or keep track of all use cases for foundational technology.

On the plus side, it is fun to discover the occasional good use case I haven't thought of.

I few weeks ago I picked up a tube-based headphone amplifier, a Schiit Lyr, the first generation model. Two tubes in it. Got it for like 80 bucks, a good deal, but he only had one tube for it.

I picked up some NOS tubes from a vendor online and rolled them into the unit.

Sounds fantastic. I was worried the previous owner had been an idiot and broke something.

Tell you what though, it runs DAMN hot.

on the one hand, the destruction of a social media company is a net good for humanity.

Hi, I'm stuck waiting on laundry to finish and am bored, so why don't I come on here and write some hot takes about YouTube?

I mean, I can think of several reasons, but too bad I'll do it anyway.

Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

@TechConnectify I've had Premium or its equivalent for years now. From a pure costs perspective, its cheap entertainment/information. I won't tolerate ads, and while I'm not a huge fan of giving Google more money, Premium makes the experience much better. Most of my YouTube viewing is done via my Roku in the living room, but some via phone or pc.

Glad to hear its helpful to creators!

Would like to hear/read a pundit, someone 'in the know' regarding the US house of reps situation, speculate on what the ultimate outcome is on the speaker replacement.

Seems unlikely that 'moderate' Repub's will approve a rabid tea-party speaker, and the rapid tea-party types can't tolerate a moderate one. Any R who votes for the Dem guy would get their home shot up and office firebombed.

So what happens? Just no speaker nor gov until Jan 2025?

@ottaross Mike Johnson is a member of leadership right now. He's been staunchly conservative Trumper....but he hasn't been a bomb thrower. He doesn't insult or ridicule other members, he doesn't vamp for TV time on Fox and Newsmax.

In short - he hasn't pissed anyone off yet. Yes, moderates could kill his candidacy, but they are running out of options and they risk getting another hard right guy with much worse temperament.

@ottaross I think they will elect Johnson.

If they don't the moderate Republicans and a few of the Democrats will empower that bowtie angry weirdo who is the interim speaker.

The second option is terrible - the weirdo doesn't want the job and if they do make him speaker, they will NEVER actually elect one until they lose the house in 2024.

Some Republicans may want that. They are always trying to prove gov doesn't work by crippling or killing it.

@ottaross No, no its not. Electing people who say their main goal is to destroy the government they are elected to isn't a great idea either.

At this point, American democracy isn't really participatory. Its by who can spend the most ad dollars.

Voting should be mandatory. It should be a national holiday, a paid one.

All voting should be ranked choice, to break the two-party dysfunction.

Public-funded elections only. No outside donations.

That's a good start.

    I work in technology....and I see the bright promise.....constantly dimmed by assholes putting it to evil use. Or even creating technology with nothing but evil use. Blockchain comes to mind.
