the inverse of "make sure you have working backups of what's important" is "give yourself permission to delete digital detritus that no longer has any value to your life"

you do not need every email you've received for the last decade.

you do not need three copies of every photo you've ever taken with your phone.

you do not need the downloads folder for each of your previous twelve laptops.

you can delete some stuff.

@djsundog Here is a post I wrote for my day job a while back. I have done this on every Mac and Linux computer I have used for the last 8 years. It solves the problem of having a Downloads directory full of 10% mission critical can't lose stuff and 90% garbage that you are inexplicably saving.

the anti-fluoride people are back... I mean, if you like anti-vax stuff why not? It's the same swindle.

"precious bodily fluids" and all that.

I hate the taste of mint so I'm always looking for toothpaste that tastes better... I was horrified to discover that if you go of the beaten path with toothpaste there are 100s of brands with "no fluoride" which only a tiny number of people really need... Be careful if you use a "crunchy" brand ... fluoride is amazing.

@futurebird I have a cinnamon flavored one I use. They are no longer stocked in our regular grocery stores but they are available online. I much prefer it to mint flavors.

@mcc I realized with horror recently that all these captchas are always about things a self-driving car would need to know. I fear we've been building this training set for them, login by login, for a decade.

This idea that quoted posts somehow diminishes or cheapens the number of original posts is one of the dumber things I ever heard from the fediverse. Together with the “it encourages dogpiling” myth, it was invented by someone almost at random and stuck with by some faithful. It’s even been academically debunked, yet the narrative lives on. I don’t know of a single journalist or information professional who agrees they are anything but important sharing tools that make social media … 1/2

You know what you don’t hear much about anymore? The debate about quoted posts. Is there still anyone that doesn’t get it? The viewing and impact is FAR greater when people can see what you’re referring to. Now almost a year in since “the migration,” I don’t think most of the offended even question that value anymore since they’ve seen it in so many ways, or faked with images, like I and many do. I am sure someone will disagree. That’s fine. But then sit down :)
