My ISP is from time to time resolving chaos.social into 31.13.96.208, an IP from facebook. The request is then ending up on their server, it can not answer the request and the presented cert is not for "chaos.social", but for *.facebook.com .
I'm about to move to a new room in Tokyo.
Things you get asked when ordering the new internet connection: "Hey, instead of your 1GBit for 4500yen, how about 10GBit for 6200yen?"
I was about to agree.. but although they have the 10GBit already terminated in the new mansion, it's not yet in the new room and would take 2 weeks.. so will stay with 1GBit for now.
Japan has stores like hard off ( used hardware, computer games etc.), hobby off (toys), books off (used books).
The new chain I saw these days in Kichijoji: Liquor off. They buy/sell charges of beer about to expire, wine and more.
Company does a 'family day' in August and I wondered how feasible it is to draw a map of the office in the style of a Japanese RolePlayGame like Chronotrigger.
I started with taking screenshots of RPG's, taking out the single tiles.. then I tried online editors - even with these it turns out quite challenging.
I'm in Germany for a bit, and trying to get to run the #Robotron EC1834 from the attic.
It's an 8086 clone from former East Germany, the 8086 cpu was produced by Siemens and imported. 20MB disk with hand written sector details. 5.25" floppy, colour video card. Interesting interface to the extension cards, no normal ISA slots.
sub9 connector exists, but no serial access, that's V24 modem.
The monitor (K7229.25) seems broken, probably best to try to get somehow else access to the video signal.
Imagine you have a CPU with unknown design. If you look long enough at what goes in and comes out, the AI software can come up with a CPU design delivering the same I/O patterns.
Seems like they did this successfully with Intel 486 CPUs, and did run Linux then on the resulting/own designed CPU.
Reminds me that at least one chip of the #c64 does not have a modern replacement..
What's a 'radical'? A graphical element. Typical Kanji consist of multiple radicals. Most radicals appear in many Kanji.
I hear this often: "learning the most essential ~2000 Japanese Kanji is so hard, for the alphabet I've to memorize just 26 characters!".
With the alphabet, you are not reading letter after letter, but memorize the whole word. The 26 letters are then considered the radicals of the word - much in the same way a Kanji is composed of radicals. https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/pronounce
Moving to a different flat today. Funny, the one-man-company I asked to move things over got a car from 赤帽, so "Red Hat", which is also the company I work at..
I was worried some pieces might be to technical and require to much prior knowledge - but judging from the questions, this was just the right tech level. Great questions!
I just wanted to plan a bike route which I could then access with #OSMand on the Android phone.
As there is no good way to plan the route on my normal browser on Fedora and then access on the phone..
So now I'm sitting here and installing Android-x86 in an emulator, just so I can then run OSMand on a proper monitor.. #routeplanningIn2023
I did a tour through 3 hard off stores today, turns out they also have 8086 systems from NEC around!
Also DOS-games on disks: Ultima underworld, Syndicate. But these are quite expensive. Empty 3.5" floppy are no longer around.
I got an ATAPI cd/dvd reader/writer home with me for 330円, will try to use it in the Sun Ultra 5 to install Solaris.
Will make a wiki page to store which hardoff features old hardware (they have a bit of that on their site, but not much). #retrocomputing
This is a thing when living in #Japan : #humblebundle bundling games, like with the current "Bandai Namco bundle", but the bundle is not available in Japan. They even send me promotion mails for these.
I guess the industry can sell these games here one-by-one with more profit.
The bundle page is just protected by IP-geo-location and can be accessed via Tor, but trying to buy the bundle via that way is then blocked further down in the purchase process.
TIL about the traditional way of sitting in Japan, the Seiza/正座:
Until Meiji era, Seiza was called 跪坐. First Glyph includes Kanji radicals for "leg" and "danger", and the second is for "sitting"
Seiza leads to numb legs/stopping blood circulation - forcing criminals or pupils into Seiza was and is often used as punishment and to get criminals to confess
The Japanese language has words for at least 8 different ways of sitting
Company gives us a free day each quarter, the "recharge day".
I spent mine today with 35km by bike on the road, visiting 4 offices, to get my German drivers license rewritten for Japan.
Probably won't need it here in Tokyo, but good to have.
Coming here 8 years ago, I had it translated to Japanese, but then there was a rumour I would have to run through the full exams, so did not run through the procedure.
Great idea: on the backside you can directly choose the details for organ donation.
