@bstrange @TheMetalDog How do I even choose??? I spent hours trying to track down a record store that carried Ride The Lightning, and I listened to Stay Hungry on repeat on my Walkman during a 10-hour drive in the car on a family vacation. Still listen to Tooth And Nail, The Warning and Slide It In ALL THE TIME. And I haven't gotten to Powerslave yet.

But I'll vote for Knights Of The New Thunder. It sounds like TNT's later releases, which I also like. More nordic power metal than pop rock.

gogmagog,
@gogmagog@dizl.de avatar

@TheMetalDog @bstrange Loads of great non metal released in 1984, too, including two of the most fun songs I know ... "Girls With Guns" and "Run Runaway."

Also a good year for Canadians. Honeymoon Suite's debut came out in 1984, as well as Triumph's Thunder Seven, Bryan Adams's Reckless and Kim Mitchell's Akimbo Alogo. Been 40 years and I still haven't mastered the opening riff to "Go For Soda."

The group Ozzy Osbourne called the "next Rolling Stones"
Ozzy Osbourne had a pedigree as a certified rock god, but he thought these newcomers could have matched The Rolling Stones if they had stayed together.

@TheMetalDog Nice to see the obligatory "hair metal" reference in that article. You know who is still together ....? Winger.

Still listen to that band because Reb Beach still shreds.

Metal Expert Says Each Hair Metal Band Had '2 or 3 Good Songs,' Names the Most 'Authentic' Band in the Genre
'You have to judge a band by their greatest hits record.'

@TheMetalDog Disagree 100 percent with the "expert." I love me some Poison, but "Every Rose ... " ain't one of them. In fact, my favorite Poison song is one that CC or Kotzen didn't play on.

@TheMetalDog And you know which band from that era and genre has a really good 12-14 song greatest hits package? Slaughter.

gogmagog,

@Theblueone @TheMetalDog Dokken's Tooth And Nail rips from start to finish, and I don't think Warrant's Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich has a bad song on it either.

gogmagog,
@gogmagog@dizl.de avatar

@Theblueone @TheMetalDog Personally, I consider the term "hair metal" to mean glam or glam-adjacent bands, which eliminates Dokken and Tesla and GnR, but to most people it means any rock which came out in the '80s that isn't Maiden or Metallica.

gogmagog,
@gogmagog@dizl.de avatar

@TheMetalDog @Theblueone I agree. I'm pretty sure it was an '90s invention, a derogatory phrase meant to belittle any '80s band that had a few hits as not serious or worthy of praise. And for the most part it worked.

gogmagog,
@gogmagog@dizl.de avatar

@Theblueone @TheMetalDog Who had the best hair in the '80s? Sebastian Bach, Nuno, and Tony Harnell are the first three that pop into my head. Who else?

@Great_Albums I like a lot of the material on On To Victory, but the mixing is horrendous. I thought maybe it was just the pressing on my vinyl copy, but what is on YouTube that I've heard sounds the same.

@TheMetalDog This is an album that seems to get so much love, but I just don't get it. I've tried and tried and tried to like this, but it's ... bollocks isn't the right word. It's just not good. A big part of my apathy is the sound of the guitars. As far away from the first two records as you can get.

gogmagog,

@TheMetalDog I can't tell you the last time I even thought about listening to that one. I can tell you that I listened to Dokken's first album ("Is this really as bad as I remember? Why, yes it is!") more recently than Somewhere In Time.
