- – Powerslave (1984). Few bands sustain energy long enough to make their fifth LP such a tour-de-force. Powerslave is where the prog ambitions Maiden always threatened leap to the fore, esp. on the epic closer "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." There's a touch of extra fury in "The Duellists" and "Back in the Village" as thrash comes sneaking up the back alley. Plus, of course, the double-fisted opener of "Aces High" and "2 Minutes to Midnight."

@Great_Albums There's a big part of me that believes "Back In The Village" is the band's best song.

- – The Number of the Beast (1982). Bruce Dickinson's keening voice and athletic stage persona launched Maiden into the big leagues, smoothing some rough edges as the songs became more anthemic. "Children of the Damned," "The Prisoner" and "22 Acadia Avenue" form a roaring trilogy over most of Side 1. "Run to the Hills" plunders the airwaves on Side 2, before the epic finale, "Hallowed Be Thy Name." "Total Eclipse" (on the reissue) is a must.

- – Iron Maiden (1980). Singer Paul di'Anno led a scrappier version of Maiden than would emerge by the 3rd album – an incarnation some fans still prefer. The raw power of "Prowler," "Remember Tomorrow" and an early mini-epic, "Phantom of the Opera," had less to do with punk than low-budget production. But it didn't hurt that the urgency of the group's sound felt brash and dangerous at a time when metal desperately needed a kick up the backside.

@Great_Albums Not a wasted note on this absolute masterpiece. I go back and forth between this and Powerslave for my favorite Maiden record.

: – Moving Pictures (1981). Withstanding the prog backlash of the early 80s, Rush reinvented their sound with (relatively) concise songs, keyboard layering, and hooks irresistible to FM radio. "Tom Sawyer," "Red Barchetta" and "Limelight" brimmed with new energy, as Geddy Lee's vocals matured, Alex Lifeson's guitar grew concise, and Neil Peart's drumming reached its apex. For the prog diehards, Side 2 was a cinematic tour-de-force.

: Saga – Worlds Apart (1981). Ontario's Saga held the flag for prog rock throughout the 1980s and beyond, quietly selling eight million records to their loyal fanbase. Worlds Apart thrives on Jim Gilmour's glistening synthesizers (80s new wave as much as 70s prog), Ian Crichton's horn-like guitar lines, and Michael Sadler's theatrical vocals. "On the Loose" and "Wind Him Up" are showstoppers, but the whole LP epitomizes Saga's distinct musical stratosphere.

@gogmagog@dizl.de avatar

@Great_Albums Absolutely love "On The Loose." Picked this up on vinyl several years ago just for that one, which was the only song by the bad I had ever heard. The rest of the album was both radically different and much better than I expected it would be.

- – Peter Gabriel (1980). Dubbed “Melt” to distinguish it from his three other self-titled LPs, this album features Gabriel at his most arch and apocalyptic. Modern life shatters and breaks under cymbal-less drums and shockwave keyboards on “Intruder,” “No Self Control,” “I Don’t Remember” and eerie hit “Games Without Frontiers.” Remarkably conversant with the new wave (for an “older” prog rocker), Gabriel stakes his boldest claim on the 1980s.
