Wrote 6 books about testing PHP code. Staff Software Engineer @ Ziff Davis Shopping. Conference speaker, organizer, and first WurstCon sponsor. Baseball fan, Magic the Gathering commander player, board game enthusiast, plus all sorts of other assorted nonsense. Probably started working with PHP before you were born. Some light reading for this weekend from @cate — my pre-order via Amazon came in (I hope they don’t rip you off on royalties for it Cate!)

@scottkeckwarren @cate Too early in my reading to draw any conclusions. Will definitely share my thoughts when I finish

I find no irony in that coding in the shadow of ChatGepetto requires an even larger commitment to testing and debugging, but those skills aren’t valued in our industry. Just ship it and get promoted or bail before you have to fix your mistakes.

let me get this straight: slack is going to scrape all our data and poison their relationship with their userbase so they can recommend emojis? emojis? really?

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@ghorwood No. They are going to scrape all our data, sell it anyone who wants it, and all we get are “recommended emojis”

The time to plan that sort of transition for me (based on age) was 10-15 years ago. I had grandparents who owned a farm and it seemed like a lot more work than what I do now. The trainwreck of tech is caused by a small group of greedy fucks who think their wealth will protect them from the future state of things. It won’t

Seeing that Slack is gonna slurp up all their customer’s data to train ChatGepetto systems and making you opt out via email is :chef’s kiss:

IRC never betrayed me like that

I have been asked this a few times: no, I was not impacted by the layoffs at Ziff-Davis this week. At this point of my career I have made the conscious decision to focus on the tasks I have been assigned, do what I think a “staff engineer” is supposed to do, and accept that the decision about how long I get to work somewhere is out of my hands. YMMV and I sympathize with folks who are unable to make the same grumpy choices.

I’ve been binge-watching YouTube videos of “Karens” getting arrested by police (I used to watch COPS back in the day) and a few things jump out at me:

  1. these encounters are likely the most stressful thing ever for these folks
  2. most do not realize they live in a heavily-policed country due to very few past interactions with police
  3. mental health issues go across all races and income levels
  4. drug and alcohol use goes across all races and income levels

Elon Musk is secretly pro-union.

Why do I say that?

Well, he's so focused on giving labor power he effectively forced them to strike against Tesla.

Truly, 8 dimensional Rochambeau going on there.

Hey PHP Folks, question for you!

Back in the early 2000s, I feel like there was two big PHP development methodologies.

The "Yahoo! System" where they did all their front end in PHP, and had a lot of built in extensions to handle their business logic.

The "Facebook System" that used PHP for everything.

Is anyone still using the Yahoo! system? Do they talk about it much?

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@preinheimer @mwop Other than Yahoo I only came across one company that used “extensions contain business logic” and it was run by old PHP contributor Ilia Alshanetsky.

For all the talk about how “small towns are friendlier” it sure does suck that one of my neighbours has a floor fan I bought via Amazon. No point in asking because they don’t really like me due to my non-obsessive behaviour over my lawn. Cutting the lawn once a week is not enough apparently.

Courier says “package handed to resident” but Amazon has refunded me.

@SandyS1 @cxj That is some kind of dirty socialist talk
