haui_lemmy,

I never said you said anything. Thats the beauty of it. Its not propaganda since it doesnt appeal to emotion but to rational thought. Pointing out how stupid hierarchy is was easy.

haui_lemmy,

Neat! :)

haui_lemmy,

I agree. The argument would be good against always-on cameras though. I dont see an argument against red light cams.

haui_lemmy,

They dont. They vote with you to abolish this shit.

haui_lemmy,

I agree that this would be a solution. Bluesky adding a bridge for ap would be 100.000 times easier though.

Why would anyone start anew? We have similar platforms already. One big downside is that someone buying into at protocol would need to start anew and bluesky is already so big that any instance needs to submit to their rule or wither.

Edit: any new instance would have to submit to their rule.

haui_lemmy,

The issue, at least for me, is proprietary software. The protocol is open and the company seems to be non profit, both big plusses, but there is no reason whatsoever to make the software proprietary imo. Federation (depending with whom) is only good if one can use non proprietary software, otherwise they control you again.

AI has such a bad rap, but I actually found this tool to be really helpful with some of my challenges (pi.ai)

It’s called Pi and it’s a conversational AI made to be more of a personal assistant. In the bit of time I’ve used it, it’s done far better than I expected at reframing and simplifying my thoughts when I’m overwhelmed....

haui_lemmy,

It might be correct at this moment (as they have not yet found the data breach or decided selling your data is more profitable).

I would absolutely prefer something selfhosted. If its small, it can run on a pi. If it needs gpu power, one could host it for their friend group or family and recoup the cost and effort that way.

But I honestly dont think a post training conversational AI (for one person) should be that demanding. We‘d need a ML specialist to confirm that though. Some really know what they’re talking about.

haui_lemmy,

I appreciate the suggestion. I‘m very sick atm and only took the time to troubleshoot because I wanted to doomscroll on the couch in peace. :) I‘ll raise the issues when I‘m feeling a little better. Otherwise the bug description will be incomprehendable.

About the compose file: I can see where you‘re coming from. I also change the stuff to fit my config but I would like to have the option to align myself with the devs as far as possible to have easier troubleshooting. I’m not one to read all release notes and research any incorporated services pros and cons since I dont have this kind of time. I check if the new versions may need new parameters and do compose up -d, start troubleshooting.

The more unique your setup, the more problems will be unique as well. As an admin by trade I always put availability first and customization second.

Have a good one.

haui_lemmy,

Interesting idea! :) thanks for elaborating. I didnt know there was something like this. As a CEO I looked at people for their talents and potential, never for their experience for it is deceiving. But a larger company would obviously need some kind of process that someone without the gift of recognizing talent can follow.

haui_lemmy,

Thanks for elaborating. The obvious flaw in this logic is that even the most original thing brings both the platform and the writer the visibility. Assuming you‘re knowledgeable and technically correct, this would always be unenforceable because it is the whole purpose of the platform to retweet, cite and repost.

I‘m not too knowledgeable in IP law or the local US court proceedings but where I live, your EULA/TOS become null and void if you put the customer at a disadvantage. Having this damocles sword dangling above their heads would most likely not hold in court (retweet = visibility but technically against TOS)

haui_lemmy,

I do kind of get where you’re coming from but I think you’re overstating the danger here.

Life is riddled with dangers. Cars that can kill you, diseases, angry humans, animals. The risk isn’t great - statistically speaking - but it’s never zero. I can relate to fear creeping into ones thoughts but we mustnt give into them.

Besides insane privilege, the only way to improve ones situation in this world is to take risks. As Youtube has flourished through copyright infringement before pulling up the ladder after themselves, we need to abolish the idea of the law abiding citizen. There is no good in following law, only morals. Obviously one should choose wisely which laws to ignore and do so in a smart way. We should also change them to benefit humanity, not mega corporations but that is a longer task.

In any case, I suggest we all give it a try and do what we think is best instead of letting fear govern our lives.

Have a good one.

maegul, to FediPact
@maegul@hachyderm.io avatar

The Fedipact statistics are interesting

7% of active users committed to - https://fedidb.org/current-events/anti-meta-fedi-pact

  • How representative of the user base is this, or are admins gatekeeping here? A large survey would be good to clear that up.

  • EG, Mastodon, relative to its userbase, seems the most "Meta friendly" with only 57% of fedipact users (but ~80% all users)

  • Fractal of niche-dom? Fedi ~1% of social media, fedi-pact ~ 10% of fedi. So anti-meta-fediverse ~0.1%?

@fediverse
@fediversenews

haui_lemmy,

I agree. You can act then. But your place will be fundamentally different from what it was.

haui_lemmy,

It is hypothetical indeed. I‘m part of a targeted minority as well and ran away from general social media for multiple reasons, hate not being the biggest. So I won’t speak to your reasons because I‘m not in the same position.

My issue was power imbalance. The single entity could do whatever they wished. If I ever went to a place that federated with them, the power imbalance is back and I‘m back where I wanted to get away from.

haui_lemmy,

I‘m pretty shocked at the amount of condescension and insults you‘re throwing my way. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Frankly, I know a thing or two about making money and building companies. I have built several. I have also met many very rich people. Needless to say I was quite shocked at how few of them are actually competent or even original.

The vast majority I‘ve met is quite smart but vastly more dominant than other people which makes all the difference. There are a few that are outrageously smart but usually thats not the defining factor. Millionaires and billionaires are not great inventors. They‘re good at manipulation first and intelligent second.

Its the same in every class. The narcissists and psychopaths dominate everyone else. I‘m obviously not talking about people who suffer from clinically diagnosed npd and aspd but the undiagnosed „functional“ variety. But I digress.

The important part in the people I talk about (billionaires) isnt making a lot of money. Thats easy if you’re smart and determined or ruthless. The hard part is not losing it, either by being stolen from or making mistakes. But that also does not explain billionaires imo. To go over the top like this, you need to accumulate against any form of empathy you might have with other people. Instead of steadily giving away to others so they can have a life too you need to amass it all in your pocket because others are so beneath you that you dont trust them even the welfare they would be paid from your taxes.

Also, since you dont seem to know the basics of investment: there are extensive archives about every penny these people own. They usually own many companies, which in turn own other companies. Thankfully this is all written down and banks check for this every time someone needs a loan. Otherwise someone like musk wouldn’t have gotten a multi billion dollar loan. It’s incredibly naive to think that its not possible to determine it. The funniest thing is that the government tax agencies make assumptions about your income if you fail to report it and tax you according to it. Thats exactly what I‘m talking about. It would be so easy to make this happen and one reason some people dont want this is because they are so naive to believe they can get there, ever. Otherwise there is no reason for a normal person to accept billionaire overlords.

One other possibility would be that starbucks for example, one of the worst tax evaders in history, would leave your country if they werent allowed to make their business as usual. But what corpo apologists dont see is that this is not how the market works. If they leave, someone else comes. And as much as I despise the leader of russia, making someone follow your law or taking away their IPs was a pretty ballsy move. Thats what I would do with companies that fail to meet the criteria to make business in my country.

It is all a little rough around the edges and someone with a little nuance should sand it down here and there but I‘m pretty sure this would help.

I‘m giving you a chance btw. I wont block you if you do away with the condescension and insults. If you dont, be ready to be blocked.

Have a good one.

haui_lemmy,

It makes all the sense.

I‘m not talking income, I‘m talking assets. Net worth if you will.

Example: you own 3 businesses worth 500 mil $ each (or whatever combination makes sense to you). To make business in a country with this mindset or even travel through it, you can only own up to 999 mil so you either give away 501 mil worh or you are banned from said country.

Your argument is in bad faith because you‘re not actually in the position to be affected by the negative impact of this so you just assume what they will do (not making more money, going to the competition etc.). Billionaires arent smart, they start privileged and are ruthless. We dont need ruthless to survive as a species, nor do we need it to live a good life. I say we need to get rid of it to survive.

Additionally, in opposition what daddy corpo tells you, competition is what makes things evolve. All companies that have killed off competition have slowed down improvement, made everything worse for the customers. Competition between companies is what keeps them improving, not monopolisties.

Classic tech bro speak btw.

Need help converting dumb switches; one w/o any lights, one w/ Hue bulbs

I’m looking for a smart home solution use two switches in my living room (EU), in order to make them just smart enough so I can control some devices. The setup isn’t very complex in itself, and I’m pretty sure it’s doable - I’m just unsure what I’d need in order to use these switches in a ‘smart’ capacity…...

haui_lemmy,

Thats interesting. I would assume ground is important for metal devices since they can shock you but what would be the risk of a plastic device without grounding be?

haui_lemmy,

I‘m shocked so many people align with me there:

  • Minecraft
  • Factorio
  • Rimworld

Additionally:

  • OpenRA red alert
  • Counterstrike 2
  • Klondike
  • Watching Phasmophobia
  • Dyson Sphere Program
  • Satisfactory
  • X4 foundation
haui_lemmy,

They wont and they will open up the gas chambers if we let them.

haui_lemmy,

Thanks for the great explanation. You said it a lot better than I could.

Imo, matrix is worth using if the bugs dont make it impossible (which they dont for me).

For peeps that absolutely need the perfect finish (which sounds like mixed priorities but maybe its just me) one could use signal.

Peeps who need polished stuff and great privacy should probably pay for it.

haui_lemmy,

I wonder if that is even legal in europe.

haui_lemmy,

No, actually there arent. Not with this many features.

Some devs do what the comminity wants, some do what they think is best. Theres no reason to even care about that fact.

Hundreds of people are able and willing to work on FOSS projects. If you make a strong enough case, you can get someone to do it. If you dont want to bother, pay someone to fork it for you.

Literally dozens of possible solutions to this. I would consider staying constructive. That way you might actually get what you want.

It's disturbing how we as a society are okay with ad companies weaponsing psychology

So many people that take psychology courses end up working in the advertisement industry because that’s where the jobs are if you have a psychology degree. Very few people sit back and think about the implications of the scientific study of the mind being used by companies to distort peoples perceptions and make them buy...

haui_lemmy,

Welcome to the club. I‘m 36 now and have seen this for the past 10+ years while its also speeding up. If I tell people they look at me with empty eyes.

Solution would be to create a movement but most people are too busy. Lmk if you want to start something.

haui_lemmy,

your fridge breaks in summer and the new model for some reason costs the same as 3 years ago!
