I agree. This opens up another question though: how do we make it so NDs (and especially autistic people) learn to communicate their needs and dont get retraumatized all the time into communicating nothing at all? More a general question, you don’t need to answer if that is not something you have an idea for.

I think the issue here is that autistic people are on the way of lgbtq people some 50 yrs back. Nobody knows a lot, some are nice and try to help, others are denying, even some autistics.

Our much bigger knowledge should help but I‘m afraid it does not, at least not enough.

I agree. More people should use fedi apps in general. But same as corpo media employs people for marketing. The fediverse needs open source marketing so to speak. We cant assume it will work on its own.

Yes, same problem here. Peertube is not really there yet but I sadly have no knowledge of peertube alternatives so far. One is crypto which I find kinda useless. Other than that no idea.

Yes, thats peertube atm. Check sepiasearch.org and sort by newest. That helped me.

I‘d try it first. You can use matrix.org as a starting point. Its the biggest matrix server and from the foundation that made the protocoll.

If you want to selfhost you need a server that is available on the web (vps or port forward). You then put synapse on it (i did it in docker) and the bridges you want. Once you get the hang its easy.

There are many detailed explanations. If you need a video explanation, I can make one.

Especially getting away from microsoft was like going outside after years. Its so much better without them I cant describe it.

I‘ll probably make a peertube video about installing linux mint or something. Its really easy for a noob like i was one not long ago. :)

Makes sense. I‘m also using youtube at times since my favorite creators are there but I‘m slowly easing off, always searching on peertube first. :)

You can bridge discord to matrix. That would unify your communications without cutting you off.

Remember that you can bridge matrix with discord, whatsapp, telegram, signal and others to unify your communication on IM/Chat

Otherwise, you could try mastodon. Its cool if you liked old twitter. I do kinda but lemmy is more my cup of tea. Also, feel free to contribute. We need people who bring relevant news to non corpo land.

You‘re talking about the peer2peer video sharing. Thats an entire different can of worms in my book. Not sure about that either. But youtube and the whole megacorp situation is an abomination that needs to go, no matter the past advances they made. One reason they act anti competitively is because being innovative is hard and risky and they‘d rather get rich securely.

It’s not hard if you selfhosted something before. I just decided to make a video about this since so many people ask how to do it.

You will need a computer that runs 24/7 though. You could technically run it at home but port forwarding is a security risk so you should be pretty advanced to do that.

I‘d rather you rent a small vps at serverhunter.com for 5-10 bucks a month. Please be aware that you need backups. Otherwise you will be sad.

Tbf signal is pretty good. Since I‘ve had someone else mention signal in this thread before I‘ve just spent an hour reading. Here‘s what I‘ve found:

the signal protocol and app

The signal protocol is rather secure and anonymous, trying to achieve zero knowledge situations with the server owners. Your contact list can apparently be reconstructed by following the messages, not sure how that works. Just found this in a reddit thread

xmpp (omemo)

The protocol used by whatsapp. Is also very secure, some vulnerabilities have been noted and some concerns with the ability to break the encryption. Not sure how that would work either but I‘ve read that a couple times now.

the matrix protocol

Matrix is notably more focused on stability and has more decentralization capabilities (apparently easier horizontal scaling since your chats are saved on ever server your chat members are on) therefore less failure likelihood.

summary

All the protocols are vulnerable to some attacks and none has a significant advantage. The xmpp foundation has apparently been influenced by google at some point and the matrix foundation has thinly veiled corporate ties which may or may not become a problem. All in all, it’s probably not important which messenger you promote, I have to say the interoperability of matrix through web api bridges has been noted by multiple sources.

Yes, its very easy. The proxy is kinda virtual though. You dont have to do a thing. Drop in the plugin, amend the config file and thats all.
