Leaving the car in a heavy downpour: wife and Child A went ahead, and I sat in the back to wake Child B, get their raincoat on and follow along. Tried to get out, and realised the child locks meant I couldn't open the rear doors from the inside. Had to contort myself into the front, get out, and then open the rear from the outside. I should have stuck with the yoga. Ouch.

@toddztoonz When is National Screaming Day, as I feel I need a day of the year when it's socially acceptable to scream at your annoyances and frustrations.

Today in : the usual, cheapest, block of Italian hard cheese I buy is out at the supermarket. Do I pay an additional 2€ for the next brand up, or buy pre-grated?

@sarajw I think this aligns with your interests.

Very disappointed that Burger King didn't offer an 'add bacon' option to the vegetarian bean burger I ordered.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@jake4480 I'm not a vegetarian, but if your only options is a Burger King or similar, then I think the vegetarian burger is the best choice. It tastes more interesting than there meat options, and it's not really a place where you're going to savour the meat taste.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@jake4480 Yeah, and this is my "beef" (pun very much intended) with lots of vegetarian options: I feel they should be cheaper than the meat version. I realise there are lots of direct and indirect subsidies for meat (and milk) production, but since you don't have to raise and slaughter /a whole animal/, surely it must take much less energy and money?

Hm, did they think the show was getting cancelled halfway through S4 or something?

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@defrisselle @lauren Yes, they had to do quite a bit of re-arranging, to the point where they filmed the final episode during S4 production, in case there wasn't a S5, but when it was confirmed, they filmed a new S4 finale.

I've gone from "AI is kinda annoying but whatever” last week to utterly furious about it this week.

Slack are now training their models on all data including DMs https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/trust/data-management/privacy-principles

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@robb @andycarolan @Cloud68 Under those circumstances, I don't understand why employers don't push back - or at least demand a discount if their staff's writing is being user to train something. We don't use Slack, but Google Chat at work, which now comes with useless and inaccurate AI summaries of unread posts, and annoys me endlessly.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@andycarolan @robb @Cloud68 I think they would push back against their supplier company - at least aim to get a discount or similar. If suddenly, different to when you entered the contract, all your user's data is being used to train an AI - I would think that's a change of contact, and since it's a B2B relationship, there would be professionals dealing with the contracts; not the usual click through EULA power imbalance you have when it's just you.

Have I complained recently how awful #GoogleDrive is to use? Endless clicking to get even the most basic stuff done - so frustrating.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@jake4480 This is in a work context, so we're obliged to use it, and the ergonomics are just awful. Moving files, finding them, doing any kind of bulk action - even just figuring out /where/ a frickin' file is, is horrendous.

Pictures of 1920s Australian criminals.

These photos are astonishing.

hl,

@bendaubney @maique They are amazing pictures, and unexpectedly sharp (I don't know why I'm surprised), but that makes them somehow seem more real and modern, than some photo of over 100 years ago.

hl,

@sarajw @sophie @robb I do find it an irritatingly American phrase, like "going forward". I'd normally describe that kind of work as "faff", even if that somehow, maybe, implies a certain amount of procrastination?

@drhayes And people these days say bands have it bad with the pittance they get paid by streaming services; and they do; but I fear it's just a different type of crap than in the past, which wasn't good either.

Dickhead next door is smoking at her little table again now that the weather has improved.

Her little table is about 5 feet from where I'm sitting in my living room, and directly below my daughter's bedroom.

So despite no-one in my household smoking, we get to enjoy 4-5 months of everything smelling like cigarettes.

Yay!

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@danielholt Commiserations. We don't have it as bad, but our neighbour smokes outside his front door (he's not allowed to do it inside, or in their garden), and in the summer it drifts into our house too. I kind of hope smokers don't realise how bad, and how far, their smoke goes. It'd be embarrassing if they did.

Fever dream idea: 's wide adaption was dependent on reliable web search: It's the fastest way of getting a working solution in an environment made up of disparate software, that's not developed and documented together for consistency. Does that mean s might become more popular as search becomes less reliable, and people have to use primary sources, like the docs more?

At work we have to register being off ill via a 'bot'. It asks for your date of birth in the format: "DD.MM.YY" When it asks for your presumed last day of sickness, it wants the date in the format "DDMMYYYY".

I think this is a cunning trick to see how ill you really are, as to put up with that nonsense you must be feeling really low.

#ShouldHaveBeenAForm

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@fedops Eventually this also ends up in a HR SAP system, making the different date formats even more perplexing.

I've had flu all weekend, so that's not been great. Especially as it means my wife's had to do most of the childcare by herself in that time. On the upside, lying in bed, sweating, and listening to podcasts through fever dreams has given me a few spectacular conspiracy theory ideas.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@qtuu I've mostly just been listening to various BBC ones that are queued up, and I never get around to: In Our Time, Analysis, The Briefing Room and More Or Less. It's more to have background noise, I've not really been in a state to take much in.
