    Yes, that is my thought as well. In the same way that Meta is making their own thing. They would likely obfuscate the Fediverse to their users as much as possible, and a proprietary app/instance combo is the start of that.

    It's actually kind of surprising to me that Google hasn't already made such a move, given the number of attempts at social and messaging apps.

    For the books, honestly, not great. It’s a fantasy series from the 90s with a magic system strongly based on a binary gender system. In relation to other fantasy series of the time, I’d say that it’s fairly progressive. A diverse cast of characters, but sexuality is rather repressed in general. The books got problems, y’all. But we love them anyway.

    The show, as a product of the 2020s, is luckily more progressive. There is also strong representation within the fandom.

    I quite like Proton Mail. Self-hosted email can be tough because so many people are concentrated on only a handful of email providers, and so if your self-hosted email server gets flagged as spam it can be a huge pain in the ass to get off that list.

    @chloyster What I have come to learn from speaking to newer readers (mostly those that have started and finished in the time since the series was finished) is that those middle books are not as bad as they felt at the time they were first releasing. But yes, there is a point in the series where the cast and scope become so large that it seems to take a very long time for thing to progress.

    Still, no better payoff in fantasy IMO.

    I'm not @GooseDwarf but I highly recommend the works of Alastair Reynolds. I got hooked and ripped through most of his books in a matter of months. Really great sci-fi. He's got a stand-alone novel called House of Suns that is a great way to check out his writing.
