Radioactive material storage?

I inherited my grandfather’s WWII compass, and had it sitting around for a long time on a shelf. I recently got a Geiger counter, and find that it’s radioactive. Around 10 microsieverts/hr. Apparently they used radium paint to make them glow in the dark. I can’t just throw it away, but I don’t want it potentially causing...

The beta emission is trivial and harmless. Alpha particles travel 7cm in air, glass absolutely stops it. A sheet of paper would.

Its perfectly safe to wear.

The paint on the watch hands contains radium and decay products but in tiny amounts. If the crystal broke wipe cup the dust with damp paper towel. Itsjust not that big a deal.

Itvwss most dangerous to the people whomade them, exposed daily during a career. Andcl the placecthst had gallons of thecshit laying around.

Eat no or little processed foods, lots of vegetables, moderated meat, and move around so that your guts can work (digestion is a physical process), eat more in morning and lunch, light dinner early, drink a lot of water, and you’d be surprised how many health problems go away

What’s not well known is that dams also have a limited life – they silt up. They produce most hydro power when new, which declines as silt fills the dam, raising the bottom/lowering head.

There’s a great book I have somewhere, is it CADILLAC DESERT? about the big 20th century push to “tame nature” and dam every river to make it “produce”. Total folly.

I run the (lol, now dead) site. It was lively for a while, interest died off, now it’s interesting again for more complex reasons. It’s still dead though!
