Folks in the EU have so many great options for repairable and sustainable smartphones from Fairphone, Nokia, Swift, etc.

Here in the US we have nothing really. What gives? Are we just not a viable market for this sort of thing?

Any recommendations for a US based person stuck on Verizon?

I'm planning my escape from iCloud. Any recommendations for storage that dont mine data or use it for machine learning? Affordable is also great! ? Please boost to give me more response as I think there are more mastodonians with the same question.

jakepi,

@iam_jfnklstrm Big fan of Nextcloud, just to add my +1 to that. If you feel ambitious, a used NUC is cheap and so is storage.

PCloud would be my second choice, they offer encryption but it is an extra addon $.

Is there a good Android app to detect unwanted Apple or Tile trackers?

jakepi,

@CleoQc Apple makes an official one for Android. I'd be interested in a more generic one too that is less brand specific.

Hey Canada. You ok neighbor? It's hard to capture in a picture but this gray haze is not fog, it's all wild fire smoke.

I rode the motorcycle today and my eyes sting. This is sadly feeling like the new normal.

Great breakdown of the RHEL issues by Jeff Geerling.

My key take away: Barriers to open source are bad. It's about collaboration, not building walls.

@RL_Dane alright... I'm hooked.

I really don't understand what purpose this move serves, especially if the RHEL source code will still be available to people with access to those repos - so it's still kind of public, if you give them your personal info and update that info annually in return? Is it just to have people use different mirrors for the sources? I don't see how this entices someone to buy RHEL or get a Developer Sub who isn't already doing that.

jakepi,

@RL_Dane @vwbusguy @dfloyd888 My first distro was Red Hat, I ditched it once it became RHEL. I learned an important lesson.
Cool: a corporate version of a community distro (Debian/Ubuntu)
Not cool: a community version of a corporate distro (RHEL/Alma). At the end of the day your upstream is beholden to shareholders and not the community.

Imagine driving this piece of shit and believing you are smugly superior to everyone around you and they are jealous

jakepi,

@briannawu @lk I guess what do we do? A car is a major purchase, I can't just get rid of it easily or throw it away.

Agreed, never a big Elon fan but he has swung from questionable to deplorable very quickly and I am afraid some of us just got caught off guard.

jakepi,

@briannawu @lk @lk @briannawu Honestly, no. This wasn't front page news at first. The racism and unsafe working conditions I remember first hearing about early 2022 when Tesla started losing lawsuits. The transphobic comments didn't seem like headline news until after he purchased Twitter and started changing policies.
I spend 30 minutes a day reading news, which only allows me to hit the headlines. I am also unplugged from most Social Media. What is the best way to "plug" myself back in?

Been using Fedora Kinoite for a few weeks now, loving it so far.

It seems like most of the answers for "how do I do X" are add this repo and layer in the packages. Ex: How do I run virtual machines?

I went with a Silverblue variant to avoid the stability issues and spaghetti mess of too many packages and sources. I don't see enough answers with "use this Flatpak" or "install it in toolbox". Is the tech too new? Am I just being an old curmudgeon for not wanting to layer in packages?

@jwildeboer It's always a tough and demoralizing time for everyone. Best wishes and hope everyone let go lands on their feet.

I wanted to update my simple contact me page, so I decided to try using Google Bard.

I realized the AI is not that intelligent. Prompting can be difficult and the results are readable, but not great. Leaving the page as is, for science.

  • jakepi,

@jwildeboer as someone who lives in a not great IP neighborhood i would be bummed if someone blocked my entire range. We're not all bad people.

I just rely on things like Spamhaus lists and call it a day.

    jakepi,

@jwildeboer you're a much better admin than I. Probably 90% of the spam that makes it through for me is faked hostnames.

I installed Mail In Box and just sort of let it run, I should spend more time being proactive with it. Thank you for the insights!
