@Stege I heard that sometimes the plastic can get slightly brittle but I haven’t experienced any major effects myself. It is super difficult to tell though, because most of the stuff I did was old and brittle to begin with already. My process is pretty slow so your mileage may vary with other methods.

What are your thoughts on Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins?

janbeta,

@root42 Extremely well made game that is still fun to play! Additionally, it was easy enough for being one of the very few jump’n’run style games I ever managed to complete despite my lack of skills. 😅

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@gesus Soviel ich weiß ist die Steam-Version auch nur die alte MS-DOS-Version, die einfach mit dem DOSbox Emulator gebündelt wurde. Die Amiga-Version ist eh besser. ;)

MIRACLE AMIGA! After a lot of patching and tracing and bodging, IT‘S ALIVE. I honestly didn’t believe this would be back in working order on the first try. Jan is happy. Video coming soon.

This repair worked out mostly because the Amiga PCB Explorer website exists. Thanks. http://www.amigapcb.org/index.php

@pulsar Always! Same with some other title screens from games that I played a lot. :D

Uff. Es ist Freitag, wenn man fast eine E-Mail herausschickt, in der man "Flachliteratur" anstelle von "Fachliteratur" geschrieben hat. Und: Nein, eine Rechtschreibprüfung erkennt das nicht zwingend 😠

closeup. Thankfully most of the ripped pads don’t matter much because they are only feeding the RF modulator anyway. Pretty confident that this thing is still fixable.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@tinspin Judging by the PCB around the area it was heavily corroded before the previous recapping attempt. I don’t really blame the person who did it, it looks like those pads were barely hanging on anyway. They messed up the through-hole caps though. The plating is ripped out completely so there’s quite a bit of hacking and bodging going on right now.

In the lab, doing stuff. Trying to fix an which was severely damaged during a recapping attempt. Lots of ripped pads and broken traces to find and repair. Fun!

And, yeah, my lab is a mess. Fixing Amigas is way more important than cleaning up though!

@kurth The other half of the room looks much worse, actually. I just moved everything over to be able to get some work done… 😅

Whoops! Latest video has upset some Commodore fanboys.

They don't like the fact that the C16 & Plus/4 are basically the same machine, just the Plus/4 has an extra 48k of ram and an extended ROM with built in office apps.

You expand the C16s ram, which is possible, and Plus/4 games work on it without issue.

Same. Machine.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@81632bit Yup, literally the same circuitry, just with more RAM and extra ROMs on the Plus/4. I would have thought people had realized that by now. 😅

Are there "good" video capture devices for PC that accept composite (and potentially s-video) input?

There are some basic, very, very old USB2 devices that do this but they seem hell bent on encoding video using awful formats.

Context: I'd like to use and record VIC-20 and Commodore 64 output on my PC i.e. I'd like the latency to not be enormously high.

My Plan B is splashing cash on a Retrotink and an HDMI capture device.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@digitalstefan I "only" have the old RetroTink2x, not able to afford the new bigger models. For RGB and component I use an OSSC. Still kind of expensive but I didn’t find any cheaper way without compromises regarding lag and quality, unfortunately. :/

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@davbucci Well done! I remember working on a lesser model Dual some years ago that belonged to my father. No automatic mechanism so it was way simpler and just needed a new pickup and some lubricant. :)
